China’s humanoid robot gets supercomputer-like brainpower, eagle-eye vision

Chinese car manufacturer Guangzhou Xiaopeng Automotive Technology, or XPENG, has boldly unveiled its upgraded humanoid robot, Iron.

The humanoid robot is equipped with the advanced Turing AI chip, boasting 60 joints, an impressive 200 degrees of freedom, and delivering 3,000 TOPS of processing power.

The unveiling is a key element of XPENG’s AI Tech Tree strategy, which boldly integrates AI, energy solutions, and embodied intelligence to shape a future ecosystem that encompasses smart electric vehicles, humanoid robots, and flying vehicles.

In November, the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer followed Tesla’s lead by unveiling Iron, its first humanoid robot. XPENG announced that Iron is already operational on its automotive production lines, assisting in the assembly of its upcoming EVs.

The company claims its humanoid robot represents cutting-edge robotics by merging design, mobility, AI, and automotive technology. Standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 154 pounds, the robot has human-like proportions and 22 degrees of freedom for precise object manipulation.

XPENG’s advanced mobility utilizes end-to-end large models and reinforcement learning, allowing for smooth, natural movements and stable walking, in contrast to the jerky motions typical of traditional robots.

Iron’s speech interaction system, derived from XPENG’s intelligent cockpit, facilitates natural conversations using active reasoning. It also leverages XPENG’s self-driving technology, integrating core AI systems from the brand’s electric vehicles and connecting automotive and robotics ecosystems.

Iron uses XPENG’s “Turing AI chip” and “Tianji AIOS” software to deliver advanced intelligence for perception, movement, and interaction. It boasts a processing power of 3,000 TOPS.

At its 2024 launch, the firm announced that the Turing chip can process AI models with 30 billion parameters and complete over 2,700 functional verifications in 40 days, three times faster than the industry standard. This performance enables Iron to think, adapt, and respond to tasks with human-like flexibility.

XPENG envisions “Iron” as a future-focused personal assistant that integrates smart mobility and robotics. Beyond manufacturing, Iron will manage tasks such as administration and customer service in retail, offices, and homes.
