A vital weather system that carries warm water through the Atlantic Ocean, forming the Gulf Stream, is on the verge of collapse. If it collapses, it will pose a “catastrophic” global cooling threat for centuries.
Over 40 leading climate scientists have issued an open letter warning that a crucial ocean circulation process in the Atlantic may be on the verge of failure. This could endanger the Gulf Stream and other processes that help keep Europe warmer.
The Gulf Stream is a powerful warm Atlantic current that flows along the eastern coast of the US and Canada before crossing the ocean to Europe. This current plays a crucial role in making the western part of the continent significantly warmer than it would be without its influence.
In a scenario similar to the 2004 film The Day After Tomorrow, 44 scientists warn that a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) could lead to disaster. The AMOC is vital for distributing heat in the Atlantic Ocean, and its failure could plunge the world into a new ice age, similar to the events depicted in the film.
The Gulf Stream is only a small part of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). A group of scientists warns that if their concerns materialize, there could be “devastating and irreversible impacts” affecting “the entire world for centuries to come.” They believe that the collapse of the AMOC occurred toward the end of the last Ice Age, around 12,000 years ago.
Western Europe’s temperatures have decreased by up to 18°F (10°C). Scientists warn that further drops could trigger extreme weather, particularly in the Nordic countries. The UK may see average temperature reductions of 18°F to 27°F (10°C to 15°C), with Scotland likely to be much colder than the south.
Across the globe, a tropical rainfall belt and monsoon regions may shift southward, leading to widespread drought and famine. Research indicates that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is slowing down due to glacial melting.
Warm water from tropical regions travels north, cools, and becomes saltier near Greenland, sinking to return south in a process called deep water formation. However, rising global temperatures are introducing more freshwater from melting glaciers, diluting the salty water and reducing its density, which decreases the amount that sinks.
Recent alarming research from the University of Copenhagen suggests that a collapse could occur as soon as next year. An open letter states: “The purpose of this letter is to highlight that having only ‘medium confidence’ in the AMOC not collapsing is not reassuring and leaves open the possibility of an AMOC collapse during this century.”
