Amidst the new nuclear arms race, there are potential flashpoints that could trigger a global catastrophe. Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued chilling threats to use nuclear weapons as tensions escalate in Ukraine.
Russia and North Korea have formed a new partnership, with Kim Jong-un potentially providing weapons in exchange for nuclear expertise. This has led to comparisons being drawn between Putin’s recent war drills off the coast of Cuba and the tense 1962 standoff between the US and the Soviet Union, which was the closest humanity has ever come to nuclear warfare.
Remembering that the nuclear threat extends beyond rising tensions with modern-day Russia is crucial. China is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal, outpacing all other countries. Notably, significant risks are emerging in Asia and the Middle East.
This week, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute released a report indicating that the number and types of nuclear weapons in development have increased. States are increasingly relying on nuclear deterrence.
An associate researcher at SIPRI pointed out that nearly every nuclear-armed state is enhancing its nuclear arsenal, either in terms of quantity or quality. Certain countries are actively expanding their nuclear weapon stockpiles, while others are maintaining a stable count and replacing older systems with newer, more accurate ones.
However, no nuclear-armed country is staying stagnant. Everyone is progressing and modernizing. Ultimately, this increases tensions and engagement among countries, effectively resulting in a new arms race.
The Middle East is currently a tension-filled region, with the Israel-Hamas conflict posing a threat of wider involvement. Iran is close to obtaining a nuclear weapon, and there are concerns about potential conflicts involving Pakistan, India, and China, especially due to the instability in Pakistan.
The escalating concern stems from China’s unprecedented acceleration of its nuclear force, outpacing all other nations. This is compounded by the tensions between China, Pakistan, and India. The precarious political situation in Pakistan and the presence of Islamic factions have sparked global alarm, with experts emphatically warning of potential dangers.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to a prolonged war and increased tensions with the West over aid. Vladimir Putin has indicated that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons to defend its territory and has showcased its nuclear capabilities through military displays.
Kim Jong-un and North Korea have been a concern for the West due to their increasing nuclear capabilities. SIPRI estimates that the country has around 50 warheads and enough material for up to 90, a significant increase from a year ago.
In 2023, North Korea conducted its first test of a short-range ballistic missile from a basic silo and has developed two types of land-attack cruise missiles (LACM) capable of delivering nuclear weapons. There’s concern that North Korea might use these weapons early in a conflict.
