In China, the communist government perceives the spread of Christianity as a significant challenge to its cultural identity and ideological framework.
Authorities believe that the growth of the Christian faith, often viewed as a Western influence, poses a threat to the values and social cohesion that the government aims to uphold.
This perspective has led to increased restrictions on religious practices and the regulation of churches, as the government attempts to maintain control over spiritual and societal narratives.
In 2016, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of national security by stating, “We must firmly guard against overseas infiltration of religion.”

The latest crackdown appears to be focused in Xinjiang province, near the borders of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Officials from the government have described the region as “not Chinese enough.”
The Associated Press reports that Xi’s government will not tolerate unregistered house churches.
