Russia Makes New Threat: “Preemptive Strikes” on the West over Ukraine War

Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president, has warned the West of “preemptive strikes” if it continues to increase support for Ukraine amid President Trump’s hardline policy.

Although the Kremlin’s official spokesman opted for a more measured tone, deeming Trump’s threats as “very serious,” Medvedev’s proven track record of anticipating Russian policy compels analysts to heed his warning with utmost seriousness.

The exchange clearly demonstrates the dangerously volatile standoff between Moscow and Washington. Russia is now explicitly proposing direct military action against Western nations in response to their involvement in the Ukraine war.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced that the Kremlin is ready to conduct preemptive strikes against the West if tensions with Ukraine escalate. In a statement to TASS, he dismissed NATO claims that Russia could attack other European countries as “nonsense.”

He noted that any increase in Western support for Kyiv could provoke a military response from Moscow. “We need to respond decisively. If necessary, we should consider launching preemptive strikes,” Medvedev stated, criticizing the West for escalating the conflict and rekindling Cold War-era illusions of superiority.

The comments follow U.S. President Donald Trump’s ultimatum to Moscow, which demands a peace deal within 50 days and threatens sanctions on buyers of Russian exports if they fail to comply. While Trump insists on wanting to end the war, his approval of additional weapons shipments to Kyiv seems to have only strengthened Russia’s resolve.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Medvedev’s comments represent “justified concerns” in light of the “confrontational” atmosphere in Europe. Although President Vladimir Putin has not explicitly supported the idea of a preemptive strike, officials indicate that the administration is carefully assessing the implications of Trump’s threat.

He characterized the conflict as yet another effort to “destroy the ‘historical anomaly’ despised by the West — Russia.” The United States estimates that the war has resulted in over 1.2 million casualties, making it Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War II.

Russia and the U.S. possess over 87% of the world’s nuclear arsenal, raising serious concerns about miscalculation. Analysts believe Medvedev’s statements often reflect genuine Russian policies, despite his official responses to Putin.
