World is “Minute to Doomsday” warns Putin Nuclear ally Belarus

Belarus, a nuclear ally of Putin, has warned that the world is ‘one minute to doomsday’ as it receives Russian nuclear warheads capable of hitting London in eight minutes.

At the UN this week, Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov warned that the world is nearing “midnight” on the doomsday clock, three years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. His remarks coincided with Russia’s plans to deploy more nuclear missiles in Belarus, escalating tensions with the West.

Alexander Lukashenko expressed concerns that Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missiles are en route to his country, capable of reaching London within eight minutes. Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov warned that the nuclear threat has again become a visible reality.

The Doomsday Clock is now set at just under one and a half minutes to midnight, the closest it has ever been. It symbolizes the threat of nuclear apocalypse and indicates how close the world is to a human-made global catastrophe, like nuclear war.

The clock is set at 89 seconds to midnight. Ryzhenkov accuses the West of rearming, which he claims threatens Belarus, reliant on Putin amid repression. In response, NATO countries, including the UK, are increasing their defense spending, with plans to raise the budget to 5% of GDP by 2035.

In his UN speech, Ryzhenkov claimed that Belarus possesses weapons of “monstrous destructive power” and accused the West of rearming and laying mines along its borders with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia. He also noted that Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons and Oreshnik ballistic missiles would be stationed in Belarus for security.

The security agreement between Belarus and Russia allows the use of all weapons, including nuclear, for defense. President Lukashenko confirmed that Oreshnik is on the way. A secret military base is also being built near Pavlovka, south of Minsk, to store these weapons near NATO borders.

The construction site is approximately 280 football pitches in size. President Putin claims Oreshnik missiles can incinerate targets at temperatures of 4,000°C, nearly as hot as the sun. These nuclear-capable weapons were tested in November 2024 against Dnipro, Ukraine, without a live warhead. Stationing them near Minsk allows for quicker strikes against Ukraine and the West than launching from deeper in Russia.

Belarus is hosting Russian Iskander-M short-range nuclear missiles near the Polish border in Kaliningrad. It shares borders with NATO members Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, as well as Ukraine and Russia. In response to tensions, NATO demonstrated its military capabilities in the North Sea this week, following allegations of Russian tests on the alliance’s eastern defenses.

F-18 fighter jets were stationed on the USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest aircraft carrier, supported by 20 ships and around 10,000 personnel from 13 countries. During NATO’s Neptune Strike 25-3 exercise, U.S., French, and Danish vessels escorted the carrier. F-35 and F-18 jets flew in formation behind an E-2 Hawkeye, showcasing their capabilities amid rising tensions with Moscow.

On September 21, a Russian reconnaissance aircraft flew low over the German frigate Hamburg in the Baltic Sea. The German defense ministry called this behavior “unprofessional.” That same day, drones disrupted air traffic at Copenhagen Airport, a few hundred kilometers away.

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, warned that “hybrid attacks” may become more frequent. US Rear Admiral Paul Lanzilotta, commander of Carrier Strike Group Twelve, noted, “We reassure our allies and establish a strategic deterrent as a team.”
