The Garden of Eden is paradise in the Bible, a perfect world where Adam and Eve lived.
Genesis 2:15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Recent satellite images suggest a possible geographical basis for the Garden of Eden. Orbital scans have identified an ancient, now-dry riverbed in Saudi Arabia that may correspond to the biblical Pishon.
Genesis describes Eden as a paradise watered by a single river that divides into four: Pishon, Gihon, Tigris, and Euphrates.
Genesis 2:10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
Genesis 2:11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;
Genesis 2:12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
Genesis 2:13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.
Genesis 2:14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
The Tigris and Euphrates rivers are well-known in modern Iraq, but the Pishon and Gihon rivers have been largely forgotten. Wadi al-Batin, a dry riverbed, runs from the Hejaz highlands near Medina to the northern Persian Gulf.
Its winding path corresponds to the biblical Pishon, which Genesis says encircles the land of Havilah, rich in gold, bdellium, and onyx.
Genesis 2:12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone.
Satellite imagery shows the river’s delta near the Gulf, evidencing its former significance. Similarly, Iran’s Karun River, meandering through the Zagros Mountains, is believed to correspond with Gihon. The Hebrew word ‘sabab,’ meaning to circle or twist, aptly describes the Karun’s meanders.
Historically, the river flowed through the Kassite territory, possibly the land of Cush from Genesis. The idea that Wadi al-Batin may be the Eden riverbed began in the early 1990s when a Boston University geologist analyzed NASA radar images. Recently, interest was renewed with their feature on Patheos.
The data showed a fossilized river up to three miles wide that was active during a wetter Holocene era before drying up between 2000 and 3500 BC due to climate change. “These satellite images reveal landscapes lost over thousands of years,” said the geologist.
“They trace rivers that influenced human settlement and may have been part of biblical stories.” The alignment of these rivers with biblical texts is significant. Wadi al-Batin and the Karun, along with the Tigris and Euphrates, would have merged into the Persian Gulf, creating a fertile cradle of civilization.
A biblical archaeologist suggests that a dry riverbed resembles the Pishon mentioned in the Bible. He believes satellite imagery of ancient riverbeds near the Persian Gulf aligns with Genesis. Environmental data shows that Arabia became arid after the last Ice Age, with rising sea levels possibly submerging parts of Eden’s delta.
This discovery has renewed interest in Genesis’s geography. Satellite maps of the Fertile Crescent, including Wadi al-Batin, show a landscape that supported early human settlements. The courses of ancient rivers align with archaeological evidence of farming and trade, hinting at a pre-flood world described in biblical texts.
A 2025 study, not yet peer-reviewed, suggests that the Blue Nile may correspond to the Biblical river Gihon. It notes that Lake Tana’s outflows could form the four rivers mentioned in Genesis. This region, at about 6,000 feet above sea level, features lush vegetation and the Blue Nile, aligning with biblical descriptions of Eden.
