A government-commissioned report says the US government must act urgently to prevent the weaponization and loss of control of artificial intelligence and avoid potential human extinction.
The report issued by Gladstone AI Inc. highlights the increasing danger to national security caused by the rapid expansion of AI capabilities that can be weaponized and lead to loss of control. As the proliferation of these capabilities continues, the risks associated with them are amplified, making it necessary for the U.S. government to intervene urgently.
The report suggests an intervention plan developed over 13 months by interviewing 200+ people, including US and Canadian governments, cloud providers, AI safety organizations, and experts in security and computing.
The first step is to establish interim AI safeguards, which would then be internationalized before formalized into law. Possible measures to regulate AI could include creating a new agency responsible for controlling the computing power that AI can access.
AI companies could be required to obtain government approval before deploying new models that surpass a certain threshold. Additionally, some propose prohibiting the publication of information on how powerful AI models operate, as is often done in open-source licensing.
The report also recommended the government tighten controls on the manufacture and export of AI chips.
