Food Security in an Era of Super El Niño Events

El Niño, which raises global temperatures, has officially begun, according to NOAA forecasters.

El Niño, meaning “little boy” in Spanish, was named by South American fishermen who observed warmer waters around Christmas, associating it with the birth of Jesus Christ. Consequently, the most significant impacts of this weather phenomenon may not be felt for several months.

Meteorologists warn that these winds, which typically blow from east to west, lead to extreme weather globally, including severe droughts and heavy rainfall, which may disrupt agricultural production and food security.

A  professor at Washington State University pointed out that droughts and colonial policies led to devastating famines, resulting in over 50 million fatalities.

El Niño is a natural weather phenomenon that occurs in cycles, redistributing warm air and moisture across the tropical Pacific Ocean. During this event, trade winds typically blowing from east to west may slow down or reverse.

These winds normally push warm water along the Equator, but during El Niño, that warm water shifts east. El Niño typically occurs every two to seven years, starting in the summer and peaking around December or January.

NOAA’s recent calculations indicate a likely “very strong” El Niño, with Pacific surface temperatures rising by over 2 degrees Celsius. According to a climate scientist at the University of Maryland, this phenomenon can cause severe droughts in some areas and heavy rainfall in others, disrupting growing seasons in key agricultural regions globally.

Scientists are still studying how this year’s El Niño will interact with global warming and its implications for food security. A professor at Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability, notes that this remains an important area of research. Historically, in 1877, a strong El Niño was linked to severe droughts in Asia, Brazil, and northern Africa.

The last El Niño occurred in 2023 and 2024 and was one of the five strongest on record, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). It contributed to the historic temperatures of 2024, making it the hottest year ever. This had devastating effects on farmers, especially in arid regions reliant on rainfall for crop irrigation.

Droughts caused by El Niño in southern Africa have worsened food insecurity and malnutrition. While local governments are taking measures like early crop planting and importing more food, farmers still face economic challenges. These strategies may ensure food supply.

This year, El Niño is expected to exacerbate the challenges farmers face worldwide, which including fertilizer shortages and price hikes since the Strait’s closure, affecting growing regions.

Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,

Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

2 Chronicles 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send diseases among my people;

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attend unto the prayer that is made in this place

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
