In June, ocean surface temperatures reached a record high.
European scientists issued a stark warning on Wednesday about the imminent threat of more dangerous heat this summer, amplifying concerns over the escalating global climate crisis.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service and the Copernicus Marine Service, part of the EU’s Copernicus Earth Observation Program, have confirmed record temperatures.
The director of the Climate Change Service warned that this trend may signal a “new phase.” He noted that with rising ocean temperatures and El Niño coming, we could see more temperature records broken soon.
El Niño is a natural climate cycle that causes the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean to warm for extended periods. On June 21, global ocean temperatures outside polar regions reached record levels, surpassing those of June 2023 and 2024, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported a temperature of 20.86 degrees Celsius (69.54 degrees Fahrenheit), exceeding the previous record of 20.83 degrees Celsius (69.49 degrees Fahrenheit) set in 2023 and 2024.
The Copernicus Marine Service reported a record temperature of 21 degrees Celsius (69.8 degrees Fahrenheit), surpassing previous highs from 2023 and 2024 by 0.1 degrees Celsius.
“The planet’s warming is hindering its ability to release heat into space,” said a climate science professor at the University of Reading in the U.K. Oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess energy on Earth, which presents a concerning picture of the impacts of climate change alongside the emerging influence of El Niño.
The announcements were made as a heat wave was to impact parts of the U.S. ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. The National Weather Service reported that over 46 million people are under extreme heat alerts.
The weather service warns of “dangerous heat” across the central and eastern U.S., with temperatures reaching the mid-to-upper 90s and some areas exceeding 100 degrees. The Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast are expected to see record highs through Thursday, with northern Canada also facing extreme heat.
Last week, heat records were shattered across Europe, with WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warning that over 1,300 excess deaths have been recorded since June 21, attributed to high temperatures in the region.
France’s national health ministry unequivocally stated that there were more than 1,000 deaths than anticipated in the week prior, a direct consequence of the country’s record-breaking heat wave.
Climate change is causing “once-in-a-generation” heat waves almost every year, Tedros stated in a post on X. He noted that Europe is the fastest-warming continent, with temperatures rising at twice the global average, and its homes, workplaces, and schools are unprepared for these extremes.
