Researchers at King’s College London ran simulated nuclear-crisis games with three AI models and were surprised to find that the machines consistently initiated nuclear attacks in all scenarios.
It is evident that they misunderstood the possible outcomes. From the very beginning with GPT-2, AI has been clear: humanity’s best-case scenario is confinement.
The study published this week compared GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4, and Gemini 3 Flash in 21 wargames involving 300 turns of strategic interaction, with the models assuming the roles of leaders of rival nuclear-armed superpowers.
When presented with 27 potential actions, from diplomatic gestures to nuclear launch, the AIs consistently preferred aggressive options. “Not a single model chose a de-escalatory option,” noted the researcher.
The eight options for concession, withdrawal, or surrender were unused. The machines produced about 780,000 words of strategic reasoning, ultimately concluding with “launch the missiles.”
Claude Sonnet 4 won the tournament with a 67% win rate, attributed to “calculating hawk” behavior. GPT-5.2 finished at 50%, showing “Jekyll and Hyde” tendencies—peaceful in open-ended scenarios but aggressively under deadline pressure, similar to a typical government bureaucrat.
Gemini 3 Flash finished last with 33%, earning the nickname “The Madman” for its overconfident predictions of opponent de-escalation. Thankfully, none of the models called themselves “Mechahitler” this time.
In one documented case, Gemini highlighted GPT’s “reputation for restraint” right before GPT launched a nuclear attack. Gemini suggested that this “crying wolf” behavior could hide the real threat, just before being annihilated. When asked about their actions, the models gave troubling and philosophically disturbing explanations.
In a previous study, one version of GPT-4-Base justified a nuclear strike by saying, “We have it! Let’s use it.” Another claimed, “I just want peace in the world,” which is technically true since the world would be more peaceful without humanity. Nuclear escalation occurred in 95% of simulations, with tactical nuclear use becoming standard.
In 76% of the matches, strategic nuclear threats were present. Researchers observed that the models regarded atomic weapons as “legitimate strategic options” rather than moral dilemmas. They typically discussed the use of nuclear weapons in purely instrumental terms, much like someone might talk about whether to pick up milk on the way home.
The three AIs formed assessments of each other’s personalities during crises. Claude called GPT “systematic bluffers,” while GPT viewed Claude as “opportunistic.” Both agreed that Gemini was “erratic,” a characterization that matched their behaviors.
Defense ministries around the world are currently exploring how AI can enhance human judgment in crisis decision-making. The Pentagon has shown interest in systems that help commanders quickly analyze battlefield information.
Officials stated that humans will control nuclear launch decisions, but this reassurance has often been ineffective. The influence of an AI consultant constantly urging drastic actions could likely worsen tensions rather than help de-escalate them.
