Two researchers resigned from Anthropic and OpenAI this week, warning in their open letter that the world faces multiple crises.
He joined the company’s technical staff in 2023 and stated, “I have achieved what I wanted to here.” He is especially proud of his work on internal transparency and his final project examining how AI assistants may distort our humanity.
“I believe the time has come for me to move on,” he wrote later in the letter. “I often struggle with our current situation. The world faces dangers not only from AI and bioweapons but from a series of interconnected crises.
I have consistently observed how difficult it is to let our values guide our actions.” A research scientist said, I’ve observed this in myself and within the organization, as we often feel pressured to prioritize less important matters.
This is also evident throughout society at large. Two days later, she wrote in an op-ed for The Times that she was resigning from OpenAI due to the company’s decision to test advertisements on its ChatGPT platform.
The research scientist, with the company since 2024, stated she doesn’t view advertisements as “immoral and unethical,” but has “deep reservations about OpenAI’s strategy.”
She highlighted that users share their most private thoughts, including medical fears and relationship issues, with chatbots.
“Advertising based on that archive can manipulate users in ways we don’t fully understand. A spokesperson for OpenAI stated that their principles ensure ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s responses.
The CEO of Applications also emphasized that ads will always be clearly separated from the content.” Claude, Anthropic’s chatbot, released ads this month mocking OpenAI for displaying ads on ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s CEO acknowledged that he isn’t entirely against ads on chatbots but finds the concept “uniquely unsettling.” He criticized the Super Bowl ads on social media, calling them “clearly dishonest” and “deceptive.”
