World Is Rapidly Running Out of 10 Natural Resources

By the time you finish reading this, a million tons of resources will have been used, from smartphones to sandwiches.

Earth.com notes that our resource consumption is so high that we would need 1.7 Earths to support our lifestyle. A quarter of the global population faces extreme water stress each year, with another billion people at risk. Key resources such as construction sand, rare earth elements, and topsoil are depleting rapidly. What other resources are becoming scarce?

(1) SAND Not all sand is equal. Construction sand, needed for concrete, glass, and roads, must be rough and angular, while desert sand is too smooth and unstable. We use about 50 billion tons of construction sand annually, driving prices up by 39% since 2020 and indicating a critical shortage with serious implications.

(2) Helium is vital in healthcare, especially for MRI machines that need about 2,000 liters of liquid helium to cool their magnets. With healthcare using 30% of the world’s helium supply, the current shortage could delay medical diagnoses and procedures.

(3)TOPSOIL is vanishing quickly, with a 1% loss each year due to aggressive farming, deforestation, and overgrazing. The UN warns that we could lose 90% of it, jeopardizing our ability to grow food, as we’ve already lost half of it over the last 150 years.

(4) WATER About 25% of the world’s population faces water scarcity, as reported by CNN. Climate change worsens this issue through unpredictable droughts and rising sea levels that contaminate freshwater sources. In Central Africa, only 30% of people had access to basic drinking water in 2020, according to IDRC.

(5) MINERALS Smartphones, laptops, and electric cars rely on critical minerals and rare earth elements. However, a significant supply challenge exists as demand is expected to triple soon, with China currently producing about 70% of the world’s rare earth elements, according to Automotive Logistics.

(6) FERTILIZER Phosphorus is essential for modern agriculture and comes from non-renewable phosphate rock. However, about 40% of cultivated soils lack sufficient phosphorus, leading to low crop yields. We are depleting our reserves without a sustainable plan.

(7) FISH Overfishing has become a global crisis. By 2021, 35% of the world’s fish stocks were overfished, and by 2022, 90% were fully exploited or depleted. This threatens both the environment and the livelihoods of 820 million people who rely on fishing for food.

(8) BEES About 75% of the world’s food relies on pollinators like honeybees, whose populations are declining due to climate change, fewer flowers, insecticides, and diseases.

(9) ENERGY Our world continues to depend primarily on oil, natural gas, and coal. At current consumption rates, our easily accessible reserves are depleting rapidly.

(10) LAND Soil erosion, urban expansion, and desertification are decreasing the land available for food production. Climate change is worsening the situation by increasing droughts and causing extreme weather events that harm soil quality.
