Australia’s rainforests are releasing more carbon than they absorb

Australia’s tropical rainforests are the first in the world to release more carbon than they absorb, a trend attributed to climate change, a study reveals.

Rainforests are often considered “carbon sinks” because they absorb more carbon than they emit, with new trees compensating for the carbon emitted by dying trees.

A comprehensive study of Queensland forest data compellingly reveals that extreme temperatures have led to a significant increase in tree deaths, far outpacing new growth.

The principal author of the study published in the journal Nature stated that the findings have significant implications for global emissions-reduction targets, which rely partly on the ability of ecosystems such as rainforests to absorb carbon.

“Current models are likely overestimating the ability of tropical forests to mitigate fossil fuel emissions effectively,” stated a representative from Western Sydney University in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Due to a decrease in newly planted trees, the report indicated that the trunks and branches of dead trees —referred to as woody biomass —have been releasing carbon rather than absorbing it for approximately 25 years.

Forests play a crucial role in reducing the impacts of climate change by absorbing some of the carbon dioxide emitted from burning fossil fuels; however, our research indicates that this function is at risk.

According to a report based on 49 years of data collected from 20 forests in Queensland, the number of cyclones has increased, and their severity has resulted in the death of more trees. This situation is making it more difficult for new trees to grow.

“It could serve as an early warning signal. The senior author described the results as concerning, stating to AFP that all tropical forests would likely respond similarly.”

Australia, one of the largest per capita polluters globally, recently announced new carbon-reduction targets, committing to reduce emissions by at least 62% compared to 2005 levels over the next 10 years.

The country is under significant global criticism for its ongoing dependence on fossil fuels. The government has made a controversial decision to permit Woodside’s North West Shelf, one of the most significant gas projects, to continue operating for another 40 years.

A recent report on climate change has confirmed that Australia has already surpassed 1.5°C of warming. It is imperative to acknowledge that no community will escape the “cascading, compounding, and concurrent” climate risks that lie ahead.
