More than three-quarters of the Earth’s support systems in danger

For thousands of years, Earth has had stable and forgiving conditions. These conditions have helped human civilizations grow and thrive.

A recent scientific assessment shows that humanity has exceeded seven of nine critical planetary boundaries, entering a danger zone where the risk of triggering irreversible and large-scale environmental damage is increasing rapidly.

The report concludes that the planet’s health is deteriorating. “More than three-quarters of the Earth’s support systems are not in the safe zone,” said the director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany and a co-author of the report.

“Humanity is crossing the safe limits of our planet, increasing the risk of destabilization. The 2025 Planetary Health Check from PIK’s Planetary Boundaries Science Lab marks a significant milestone: ocean acidification is now classified as a breached boundary.”

This text highlights critical global issues, including climate change, biosphere integrity, changes to land and freshwater systems, and the rise of plastics and synthetic chemicals. Only the stratospheric ozone layer and atmospheric aerosol levels remain within safe limits.

The oceans have long buffered the adverse effects of human activity by absorbing heat and carbon dioxide, but this comes at a cost. A recent report confirms that we have crossed the threshold for ocean acidification, as increased CO₂ absorption alters the ocean’s chemistry, raising its acidity.

Since the Industrial Revolution, ocean surface pH has decreased by 0.1, indicating a 30% increase in acidity. This change is harming marine ecosystems, with pteropods showing shell damage that threatens their role as a food source for fish. Cold-water corals and Arctic marine life are also at greater risk. Urgent action is needed to protect our oceans.

Ocean degradation is increasing, endangering fisheries and the billions who rely on them. Co-leader of the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab stated, “The trend is moving in the wrong direction. The ocean is increasingly acidic, oxygen levels are decreasing, and marine heatwaves are rising.”

This situation is intensifying pressure on a vital system for Earth’s stability. A member of Planetary Guardians called acidification a “flashing red warning light.” She warned, “Ignoring it risks collapsing our living world.”

”The planetary boundaries framework acts like a medical chart for the Earth. Scientists monitor nine key processes—such as climate stability and biosphere health—that are vital for sustaining the Holocene, a stable geological epoch that began about 10,000 years ago.

This situation increases the risk of catastrophic tipping points, such as the collapse of the Greenland ice sheet or the dieback of the Amazon rainforest. CO₂ levels are currently 423 ppm, well above the safe limit of 350 ppm, and the extinction rate is at least ten times higher than acceptable levels.

The overuse of nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers pollutes land and water, creating dead zones. The report highlights the interconnectedness of environmental crises: climate change worsens biodiversity loss, deforestation causes droughts, and pollution reduces the ocean’s capacity to absorb carbon.

Global leaders, including former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, warn of a planetary emergency. He highlighted that crossing the ocean acidification threshold is a scientific alert and a moral call to action. The report states that Earth’s health is nearing a “high-risk zone,” increasing the risk of irreversible changes.
