New SR-72 Darkstar and second stealth nuclear bomber

The SR-72 “DarkStar” hypersonic aircraft, traveling at Mach 6, provides a revolutionary tactical advantage for the United States.

The SR-72’s incredible speed enhances its survivability, enabling it to outmaneuver advanced air defenses, such as Russia’s S-500. Designed for reconnaissance and as a strike platform, it can launch hypersonic weapons, making it a potential game-changer in aerial combat.

The SR-72 will fly almost twice as fast as the SR-71, which has successfully evaded enemy air defenses despite some incidents. It features stealth capabilities, including a radar-absorbing coating, but is primarily recognized for its exceptional speed.

Although the U.S. has many reconnaissance satellites, the Darkstar is an advanced hypersonic technology demonstrator that could enhance seventh-generation flight capabilities, despite its origins dating back to the Cold War era.

The United States may be entering a new Cold War with Russia and China, making the SR-72 crucial for intelligence gathering, like the SR-71 before it.

Recently, the U.S. unveiled the B-21 Raider, its second stealth nuclear bomber, costing £570 million. It arrived at Edwards Air Force Base in California on September 11, with plans to produce 100 units.

The warplane has a range of 12,000 kilometers, enabling global nuclear strikes. The U.S. Air Force (USAF) noted that adding a second test aircraft enhances mission systems and weapons integration, advancing the program toward operational readiness.

The two pre-production B-21 Raiders from Northrop Grumman are assigned to the 420th Flight Test Squadron for mission system and weapon integration tests, to achieve operational readiness later this decade.

“The arrival of the second B-21 Raider gives our flight test campaign significant momentum,” said the Secretary of the Air Force.

“We can now accelerate evaluations of mission systems and weapons capabilities that support the strategic effectiveness of this aircraft.” The USAF added, “The aircraft is expected to enter service in the mid-2020s, with a production goal of at least 100 units.”
