The risk of global nuclear conflict has risen as regional disputes approach crises that could affect the entire world.

Analysts warn that global tensions are increasing the risk of nuclear conflict. Key factors include Russia’s war with Ukraine, escalating rhetoric between Putin and Trump, rising hostilities between India and Pakistan, Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons, and Western concerns about China’s rise as a superpower.

“The risk of nuclear conflict is far higher than what should be acceptable,” said a research affiliate at the Centre for Existential Risk at the University of Cambridge. “This threat has increased significantly in recent years, and likely even more so in the last few months.”

A professor of nuclear policy at the University of Sussex highlighted a significant gap between the perceived and actual threats of nuclear conflict, which are currently much greater than most realize. “We’ve faced a huge nuclear threat for decades, and eventually, our luck will run out,” he stated.

Since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia has issued nuclear threats against the West. Three days after the invasion, it put its deterrence forces on “high combat alert,” claiming it was in response to Western rhetoric.

In October 2023, Russia conducted drills with a simulated nuclear exchange and later announced the relocation of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. Recently, the nuclear threat has increased due to Trump. The risk has been particularly heightened by the American President, who has had a significant impact on the global culture and discourse surrounding nuclear weapons.

He pointed to Trump’s favored approach of addressing confrontations. “His belief that peace is achieved through strength is becoming increasingly influential in government positions worldwide, especially concerning the threat of nuclear warfare,” the professor said.

This month, the US President ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in strategic regions due to “highly provocative” comments from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The US and Russia each possess around 1,550 nuclear warheads and maintain nuclear submarines.

Despite recent tensions, there appears to be a temporary easing, as Trump and Putin met in Alaska last week to discuss the war in Ukraine. Putin has not threatened nuclear action more than Trump has; he primarily aims to remind the world of Russia’s nuclear status.

However, some officials like Medvedev have shown a willingness to use nuclear weapons, and state television has hinted at readiness for conflict. “It’s difficult to gauge Russia’s true intent regarding nuclear preparedness,” the professor noted.

A nuclear analyst stated that while both the US and Russia are threats, dialogue can be risky and lead to escalation. The Royal United Services Institute believes that the risk of nuclear weapon use is low unless Russia suffers major failures in conventional military forces.

He suggested that Russia is currently focused on using the threat of nuclear escalation to deter US intervention in Europe. Experts warn that China’s rise as a global superpower has increased nuclear risks, leading to a growing belief in the US that conflict with China is “almost inevitable.”

The threat from Iran has increased after US-led attacks on its nuclear facilities this year, in coordination with Israel. Additionally, rising tensions between India and Pakistan pose an immediate nuclear risk, especially following a May incident where militants killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi attributed to Islamabad.

While Pakistan denied involvement, tensions remain high. Stirling warned of a “global culture” where states threaten catastrophic destruction to maintain security. He noted that many individuals, from leaders to lower-level officials, can trigger devastating consequences, highlighting that the overall system is the real problem.
