Elon predicts millions of people will have his brain chips within 20 years

Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk in 2016, aims to help individuals with traumatic injuries control computers with their thoughts. Its first device, “Telepathy,” represents a significant advancement in brain-computer interface technology.

The implant includes over 1,000 electrodes, greatly enhancing precision compared to similar devices. Noland Arbaugh, Neuralink’s first publicly announced patient, is paralyzed from the neck down. After receiving the implant, he can use computers, play video games, and explore career opportunities.

Using Neuralink is like using “the force” to control a cursor. The company’s expansion plans are ambitious, with Musk aiming to achieve over 1,000 human implants by 2026 despite facing regulatory and technical challenges. They plan to increase the number of patients to “high single digits” by the end of 2024. While these targets might seem optimistic, they demonstrate the company’s confidence in its technology and the regulatory process.

The Neuralink device features a high-density electrode array and wireless communication for improved precision and ease of use. A specially designed surgical robot performs the implantation with wireless charging and communication.

Following FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval in May 2023, Neuralink has begun its first human trials, enrolling five to ten patients for up to one year, followed by additional studies. Full commercialization may take five to ten years.

The implications of this technology extend beyond medical uses. Musk envisions a future of human-machine symbiosis that could transform human capabilities and society, raising important issues about access, data privacy, and neurohacking risks. While Neuralink currently aims to assist people with disabilities, Musk suggests future applications might address hearing and vision loss, though these capabilities are still untested.

Musk aims to merge human and artificial intelligence. The company is focused on making brain-computer interfaces widely accessible, marking a significant medical breakthrough and a potential new chapter in human evolution. The next few years will be crucial for Neuralink to realize its vision of widespread adoption.
