The date of December 25 for Christmas was already popular in pagan religious celebrations as the Sun’s birthday.
The word “Christmas” has its roots in the traditions of the Catholic Church, derived from the term “Christ-mass.” This celebration is often intertwined with the birth of Christ and with the practice of Communion, or the Eucharist. The Bible does not specify Jesus’ birth date.
Luke 2:7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
The shepherds were in the field watching their flocks when Jesus was born.
Since December is cold and rainy in Judea, the shepherds would have sought shelter for their flocks at night.
With those scriptures, Jesus was born in the summer or early fall.
Christmas traditions today originate from pre-Christian Winter solstice celebrations. This event, occurring twice a year, marks when the sun is at its highest or lowest point. In the northern hemisphere, the Winter solstice usually falls between December 20 and December 23.
The Winter Solstice was a significant event for the ancient Celts. Burial chambers like Newgrange in Éire, Maes Howe in Orkney, and Bryn Celli Ddu in Wales were constructed to capture sunlight during the solstices.
Druids, the priestly class in ancient Celtic society, celebrated Alban Arthuan, or Yule, at the Winter Solstice by ceremonially gathering mistletoe from oak trees, as noted by Roman historian Pliny the Elder.
During the first millennium, Christianity spread by adapting to local ceremonies and traditions. Early Christians also incorporated existing deities, such as the Celtic fertility goddess Brigid, who became known as Saint Brigid.
Many Christmas traditions have roots in Celtic history. Druids gathered mistletoe for its magical properties, while the Yule log was burned to combat midwinter darkness and bring good luck. Evergreens like holly and ivy were believed to ward off evil spirits. Trees were decorated with symbols of solar objects and offerings to Celtic gods and goddesses.
From 1659 to 1681, Christmas was banned in various regions of America, particularly in the New England colonies. This prohibition was largely driven by Puritan leaders who believed that the holiday was deeply rooted in pagan traditions.
During this period, celebrating Christmas was considered a violation of religious principles, and those caught celebrating it could face fines or other penalties.
