President Trump said Sunday that the U.S. will defend Poland and the Baltic countries if Russia’s aggression escalates after recent airspace incursions.
When asked by reporters on the White House lawn if America would defend Poland and the Baltic nations if “Russia keeps escalating,” President Trump responded, “Yes, I would.”
“I would,” President Trump said before heading to the Arizona funeral of Charlie Kirk. He confirmed he was briefed on the tense situation with Estonia, adding, “Yeah, we don’t like it.”
Estonia reported that NATO intercepted three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets that entered its airspace without permission for about 12 minutes. Russia denied the accusation, insisting the flights were in line with international rules and did not breach any borders.
The incursion was reported after Poland consulted with NATO allies about recent breaches of its airspace by Russian drones and fighter jets. On September 9, Poland claimed that 19 to 23 Russian drones entered its airspace, with at least four shot down.
Romania later reported that a Russian drone had entered its airspace. As NATO members, these countries could invoke Article 5, obligating the alliance to respond militarily in the event of an attack.
The three countries were once under Soviet control—Estonia as a republic and the others as satellite states. Former President Trump has expressed frustration with NATO members not meeting military spending commitments and is now advocating for increased sanctions on Russia.
He wants the U.S. to collaborate with allies on tariffs or sanctions against countries purchasing Russian oil or funding the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine. Earlier this month, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania urged Congress to continue military assistance under the Baltic Security Initiative amid proposed cuts.
“We respectfully request your support for funding the Baltic Security Initiative in the Defense Appropriations Bill for fiscal year 2026 and its authorization in the National Defense Appropriation Act,” the parliaments of the three countries stated in a joint letter.
Russia’s aggression towards NATO allies comes shortly after President Trump met with Putin to discuss the war in Ukraine. Since that conversation, the Kremlin has intensified its military offensive in Ukraine.
