It Was Lost in Antarctica… Now It’s Back With Terrifying Data

An Australian national science agency, CSIRO, launched an experiment in Antarctica that yielded unexpected results. A free-floating ocean robot was deployed to collect data from the Totten Glacier.

This glacier alone could potentially raise global sea levels by nearly 5 feet. It’s crucial to identify the areas at risk, as we may already have reached a point of no return for specific climate change impacts.

Consequently, the world’s coastlines could be in jeopardy regardless of our actions. Interestingly, what initially seemed like a scientific mishap turned out to be a fortunate discovery for the team.

A current decisively pulled it westward, diverting it from its original destination. It arrived at a location that posed significant challenges for scientific analysis, but ultimately yielded scarce, valuable data.

The ocean float is equipped with salinity and temperature sensors, designed to dive beneath the water and resurface every 10 days to transmit critical data to satellites. Such robots play a vital role in ocean research and are essential for measuring the impact of climate change on marine waters and glaciers.

This study examined the potential impact of Totten Glacier melting on global sea levels. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) even provides an interactive map showing which coastlines could be permanently underwater in the future.

The float was inadvertently displaced from its intended path. It became trapped beneath the ice of the Denman Glacier, making it extremely difficult for scientists to observe and collect data from this location. Although the research team feared it was lost forever, the float re-emerged nine months later.

A set of crucial data accompanied the robot, detailing the Denman Glacier and the effects of climate change on Antarctica. The robot traveled beneath the Denman Glacier and Shackleton Ice Shelf, and despite being trapped, it continued to measure water salinity and temperature from the sea floor to the base of the ice shelf.

The float could not transmit data to the satellites, rendering the research team navigationally lost. However, a vital trail of clues remained: every time the float attempted to surface, it collided with the ice shelf, providing critical measurements of its depth.

The research team successfully compared the ice shelf’s depth data with satellite measurements of the area. This enabled them to accurately trace the ocean float’s path, providing clear insights into the specific locations of its salinity and temperature measurements.

The robot successfully collected 195 data profiles during its mission. The findings conclusively show that the Shackleton ice shelf is secure and not at risk of melting from warm water. However, the Denman Glacier is melting significantly due to warm water beneath it.

The ocean float collected data from previously uncharted areas. This was the first line of oceanographic measurements taken beneath an East Antarctic ice shelf. The information gathered is crucial for understanding this region and assessing the potential risks to the Denman Glacier.

Since the robot float survived under the ice for so long with good data, scientists look to the future of sending more of these floats into very remote places in hopes of returning rare data. Though that comes with its risks, the insights gathered could be critical for monitoring glacial melting and predicting rising sea levels.

The ocean floats’ measurements of Eastern Antarctica are critical for future research. This region contains significantly more ice than West Antarctica, making the melting glaciers a serious and urgent threat to coastlines.

Research beneath ice shelves can reveal whether Antarctica is rising from the ocean and what the potential effects on the planet might be. Data from a lost robot was published in Science Advances in December 2025, titled “Circulation and Ocean–Ice Shelf Interaction Beneath the Denman and Shackleton Ice Shelves,” becoming a valuable resource for Antarctic studies.
