James’ Ossuary unveiled in new ‘World of Jesus’ exhibit with over 350 artifacts from Holy Land

A small stone ossuary with the inscription “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus” is on display at Pullman Yards, where an exciting exhibit titled “Discovering the World of Jesus: Ancient Treasures from the Holy Land” opened on December 3.

The exhibition features over 350 artifacts from the Golan Collection, allowing visitors to explore the era of Jesus, from His birth to the Resurrection. Golan, an Israeli engineer and antiquities collector, has devoted his life to this collection. “I started collecting at age 9,” he recalls, noting his discovery of the earliest known dictionary, crafted in cuneiform.

“Israel is an exceptional place to search for antiquities; every stone and object has its own story. For the first time, Golan’s renowned collection has left Israel to embark on a tour in the U.S. This offers visitors a rare opportunity to connect with artifacts that illuminate the daily lives, culture, and faith of individuals who lived during the time of Jesus.”

The exhibit showcases important items like ossuaries attributed to James, Jesus’ brother, and Zacharias, father of John the Baptist. It also features hundreds of artifacts, including lamps, sandals, coins, and stone vessels resembling the cup used at the Last Supper.

“We have the earliest images of the Nativity story from a church dating back to the fourth century A.D., as well as the earliest description of the Holy Sepulcher. This site is traditionally believed to be where Jesus’ body was placed in the cave and subsequently resurrected,” Golan, who is Jewish, stated.

A retired professor of religious studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte who specializes in Christian origins said the exhibit bridges a vital gap between text and history. He believes the exhibit’s immersive approach is a game-changer.

Rather than presenting artifacts in isolation, “Discovering the World of Jesus” tells a chronological story complemented by audio and visual effects.”You walk through history, from Herod the Great to the crucifixion and beyond. You get a feel for what life was like. What lamps did they use? What dishes did they eat from? ”

For many visitors, the exhibit aims to challenge long-held assumptions. For instance, the manger where Jesus is believed to have been laid at birth was likely not a wooden crib but rather a stone trough. “These artifacts correct misconceptions we may not even be aware of,” one expert noted. “The Bible comes alive in a tangible, material way.”

The James Ossuary is a remarkable artifact with an Aramaic inscription identifying it as belonging to “James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus.” The professor confirmed its authenticity through chemical and microscopic testing, dating it to the first century. He noted that the statistical evidence is compelling and highlighted its significance as a rare physical link to Jesus’ family: “If this is James’ ossuary, then his family likely mourned his death before it.”

The exhibit provides a unique connection to Jesus and is family-friendly. Visitors can see ancient coins from Pontius Pilate, crucifixion nails showcasing Roman execution methods, and sandals worn by children in first-century Judea. A short film, “Daily Life in the Time of Jesus,” enhances the experience. One notable item is a stone cup resembling the one used at the Last Supper; Golan noted it “wasn’t made of gold or covered in diamonds, as some might imagine.”

“It was a simple stone cup used during Passover by Jewish people in Jerusalem,” Golan noted. “This particular cup shows signs of fire damage, likely from the destruction of Jerusalem, as Jesus predicted.” He emphasized that these artifacts help us connect with history and bring the Bible to life.

“Holding an artifact from Jesus’ time lets you feel the lives of those who made it.” Visitors can write prayers at the exhibit’s end and leave them on a symbolic tree. These prayers will be taken to a Galilee church near Jesus’s childhood home.

The professor stated, “Jesus lived in the real world. This exhibit reveals the world’s sights, sounds, and objects, making the story more human and powerful. The tree is a fitting conclusion to a journey that starts with ancient artifacts and connects to faith and history.”
