Iran hits Truth Social in cyberattack: is US grid next?

A cybersecurity expert indicated that Iran launched cyber attacks against the U.S. last week, warning that more are likely to follow after Iranian hackers targeted President Trump’s website, Truth Social.

The co-founder and former CEO of ConnectWise states that recent denial-of-service attacks have targeted banks, defense contractors, energy firms, and Truth Social. This indicates a direct response to President Trump’s actions against their nuclear facilities. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the president’s health following the discovery of an unusual sign.

The U.S. may be unprepared for cybersecurity threats, as many businesses and local governments fail to invest adequately in protection. Vulnerable municipalities could become targets of attacks, including those from Iran. “Hackers will try to erode public trust in computer systems,” he notes, fostering fears of infiltration.

Consider this a form of cyberterrorism. He notes that planning a terrorist attack on the U.S. would involve a similar strategy. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security warned of potential Iranian attacks, highlighting that Iranian ‘hacktivists’ target U.S. businesses with weak cybersecurity.

The National Terrorism Advisory stated that Iranian leaders and their proxies, like Hamas and Hezbollah, have encouraged violence against U.S. assets following bombings of Iranian nuclear sites. “We know who is behind it,” he says.

These groups are loosely tied to Iran, allowing the government plausible deniability by outsourcing hacking through contracts with IT firms. While most observed attacks have come from Iranian hackers, two pro-Palestinian hacktivist groups have claimed they targeted over a dozen aviation firms, banks, and oil companies.

Researchers at the SITE Intelligence Group have observed that these groups are recruiting other hackers to join their efforts.

Iran has state-backed groups, like the ‘Mysterious Team’ and ‘313 Team,’ that offer professional services. They have previously launched significant cyberattacks on targets like Saudi Aramco and the Sands casino.

Recently, their activities have focused on Israeli missile alert systems and think tanks. When asked about the likelihood of a more severe attack on U.S. companies, it was probable, suggesting that this could be just the beginning of a coordinated and escalated threat.”

The initial wave of attacks primarily involved Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which disrupt website access and payment systems. A cybersecurity expert predicts that future attacks will combine DDoS with phishing and other traditional methods to “create pandemonium… with geopolitical intent.”

This week, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also warned at the NATO summit that Iran and Russia regularly conduct cyberattacks, stressing the need for the UK to be prepared for such threats.

“It’s crazy. I could list some outrageous actions they take, but their main goal is to disrupt public confidence, not just infrastructure,” the former CEO of ConnectWise continues.

“They might target critical systems like the electric grid or water supply, affecting many citizens and creating fear. If used effectively, these tactics can distract from their real intentions, much like how we successfully diverted their attention before.”

The theory posits that while Iran’s technology is less advanced than that of the U.S. or China, small disruptions can lead to larger problems. He views these limited capabilities as an opportunity for the U.S. to test its defenses.

“It’s a digital border with many gaps. We’ve secured our physical borders, but now we must seriously address our digital borders,” the former CEO of ConnectWise warns.
