3I/ATLAS is a rare interstellar visitor that has captivated astronomers since its discovery in July 2025.

This interstellar object is the third of its kind observed traveling through our solar system, presenting scientists with an intriguing mystery. On December 19, 2025, it will pass Earth at a distance of approximately 270 million kilometers, allowing global telescopes to make detailed observations.

Harvard Professor Avi Loeb has become a key voice in discussions about 3I/ATLAS, known for challenging conventional scientific beliefs. He previously suggested that ‘Oumuamua, the first interstellar object detected in 2017, might be artificial.

Although most astronomers disagree with Loeb, he advocates for further investigation of 3I/ATLAS. He believes that unusual findings should not be dismissed, as exploring the unknown is vital for scientific progress. 3I/ATLAS is unique among interstellar objects studied by astronomers.

The object is much larger than earlier interstellar visitors, measuring several kilometers across, making it the biggest one observed so far. Traveling at about 130,000 miles per hour, it outpaces both ‘Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, confirming its origin from outside our solar system. The material in its tail is also surprising.

Most comets have a lot of water ice, but 3I/ATLAS’s tail contains only 4% water, with the rest being gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Notably, astronomers found nickel tetracarbonyl, a gas typically associated with industrial activity on Earth.

This is the first time this type of gas has been seen in a comet, leaving scientists puzzled about its formation in cold space. The trajectory of 3I/ATLAS is unique, as it follows a complex path that brings it close to several planets, unlike the straightforward routes of typical comets.

Some scientists speculate that 3I/ATLAS may be surveying planets, although its path could be coincidental. Its retrograde motion, moving against the direction of planetary motion while remaining aligned with their orbital planes, is quite rare among interstellar objects.

The object’s path coincides with the region of the sky that received the “Wow! Signal” in 1977, though this may be coincidental. As 3I/ATLAS approached the Sun, it appeared as a bright point of light without a typical comet tail. Remarkably, it had a continuous jet aimed at the Sun and turned brilliant blue at its closest approach, a phenomenon not seen in earlier comets.

Recent studies of 3I/ATLAS show unique light reflection patterns, suggesting unusual materials on its surface or in its atmosphere. However, many astronomers believe these characteristics could be explained by natural processes, such as formation in an atypical environment or rare space processes.

NASA and other space agencies emphasize that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Avi Loeb and a small group of researchers suggest considering the possibility that 3I/ATLAS could be artificial, though they are in the minority.

This will assist astronomers in learning more about the object and may help answer some of the significant questions it raises. Regardless of whether 3I/ATLAS proves to be a natural curiosity or something more, its journey serves as a reminder to scientists of how much remains unknown about space.
