China has warned Britain after the UK and US sent warships through the Taiwan Strait, claiming the allies threaten regional peace and stability.
Beijing reported that it monitored the American destroyer USS Higgins and British frigate HMS Richmond during their transit on Friday, which Washington and London deemed routine.
The Eastern Theatre Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in Beijing accused the pair of “trouble-making and provocation.”
Senior Colonel Shi Yi stated that their maneuver sent “the wrong signals” and undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The command is on high alert and focused on protecting national sovereignty and regional stability.
The Ministry of Defence clarified that the sailing was routine, with the Royal Navy operating in full compliance with international law and exercising freedom of navigation as per the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The US Indo-Pacific Command described the mission as a routine transit beyond any coastal state’s territorial sea, emphasizing that navigational rights in the Taiwan Strait should remain unrestricted.
China has issued a warning following a recent voyage by Canadian and Australian warships, the HMCS Ville de Quebec and HMAS Brisbane, through a sensitive waterway that drew a furious response from Beijing.
China showcased its naval power by sending its newest aircraft carrier, the Fujian, through the strait. The vessel departed from Shanghai on Wednesday and is en route to the South China Sea for scientific research and training exercises.
In response to questions about Fujian’s entering active service, foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian stated, “The carrier’s cross-sea tests and training are routine parts of its construction and aren’t directed at any specific target.”
Chinese warships are operating in accordance with both domestic and international laws and regulations. In a related exchange, Defense Minister Dong Jun warned U.S. counterpart Pete Hegseth against backing Taiwan.
Dong stated that any military attempts for independence or to leverage the Taiwan issue against China will be resisted. Washington responded firmly; Hegseth told Beijing that the U.S. does not seek conflict or regime change but will protect its vital interests in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beijing claims Taiwan is part of China and has vowed to reunite with the island, potentially by force. While the U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan as independent, it opposes a forceful takeover and continues to supply weapons to the island.
Recently, China demonstrated its naval strength by sending the aircraft carrier Fujian through the Taiwan Strait for training exercises in the South China Sea.
