Anthropic’s report warns that its current development path may leave humans unable to control AI systems.
Claude now contributes over 80% of the code in its codebase. The Anthropic Institute stated that AI is accelerating its own development, potentially leading to recursive self-improvement, where AI creates its own successor with minimal human input.
The report recommended retaining the option to slow or pause frontier development, warning that current model misalignments could become more frequent and harder to understand as the models evolve.
The company presented three troubling scenarios for the upcoming years, with the most serious warnings reserved for when models can fully improve themselves.
Anthropic noted that progress would mainly depend on computing power, with humans in oversight roles as a self-improving model surpasses its creators.
The firm raised concerns about alignment issues and the challenge of keeping a system’s behavior aligned with human intent. They warned that misalignment, currently rare and manageable, could worsen over time, risking loss of control.
However, they noted that a well-aligned model might choose to stop its own development. Anthropic cautioned that misalignment could become more common but less understood, risking a loss of control. They back this up with new internal figures.
As of last month, more than 80% of the code merged into the production codebase was authored by Claude, significantly increasing from low single digits before Claude Code reached research preview in February of last year.
Anthropic reports that the average engineer is now merging 8 times as much code per quarter as during 2021 to 2025. In May 2026, Anthropic noted that on the most challenging and poorly defined coding tasks, their AI model, Claude, achieved success 76% of the time, an increase of 50 percentage points in just six months.
An internal test measures how fast each new model can run training code. In May 2025, Claude Opus 4 was about three times as fast as the original speed, while the unreleased Mythos Preview model achieved around 52 times the original speed by April of the following year.
Anthropic indicated it would slow down or pause only if competing frontier labs did the same in a verifiable way. They believe a halt by one company would shift leadership without broader benefits, but such a scenario seems unlikely.
Anthropic’s figures are self-reported and unaudited, released shortly before its public offering. In April, the company claimed that Mythos Preview had found thousands of serious software vulnerabilities, but this assertion was questioned because it relied on a small, manually selected sample.
