Norway’s Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a crucial safeguard for future crops.
Researchers say the planet holds a vast reserve of seeds in the soil worldwide. This underground store is vital for ecosystem recovery and protecting the crops and food systems we rely on.
According to ScienceAlert, the analysis used a global soil-seed database with 3,096 samples from 94 countries, including around 1,400 studies on millions of seeds and seedlings.
Researchers in a study published in Nature Communications discovered that land, wetland, and aquatic habitats hold an average of over 5,000 buried seeds in every 10.8 square feet (1 square meter).
Researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and the University of Prince Edward Island in Canada conducted the study.
The soil seed bank is significantly larger than any human-made vault. However, researchers found a trade-off: areas with diverse plant species often have fewer seeds, while dense seed stores tend to have lower diversity.
Tropical environments usually have high species richness but lower seed density, while arable farmland shows the opposite. Soil seed banks are essential for nature’s recovery; they allow green life to return after disasters, using stored seeds without human intervention.
Healthy plant communities support food production, reduce erosion, and protect water systems, creating stable landscapes for both people and wildlife. Seeds buried underground are essential to the resilience of farms, forests, wetlands, and other vital environments.
This seed reserve forms naturally as seeds fall, are carried by wind or floodwaters, or accumulate in leaf litter. Studies indicate that seed diversity is higher in undisturbed habitats than in degraded ones, suggesting that human activity may be weakening this vital natural resource when ecosystems need it most.
Scientists have created a global benchmark for the soil seed bank, giving restoration planners, farmers, and conservation groups valuable insights into areas that may thrive naturally and those needing active intervention.
The findings highlight the importance of protecting intact habitats to preserve biodiversity. Degraded landscapes often have fewer seed types, which limits communities’ ability to recover naturally after disturbances. As a result, human-built seed banks remain essential for biodiversity preservation.
Facilities like Svalbard are essential for preserving crop diversity, and this new research highlights the importance of protecting living seed reserves already present in ecosystems.
The study reveals both the vast scale and the vulnerability of this underground resource. As the researchers noted, “In the broadest sense, if you point your finger to the earth, you are likely to be indicating a seed.
