Mammals have increased their nocturnal activity by 1.36 times due to human disturbance, now being active at night around two-thirds of the time. A *Science* study found that about eighty-three percent of these species are shifting their behaviors to avoid human-related disruptions like noise and vehicles.

The lead researcher highlighted that human activity is making the natural world more active at night. For example, Sumatran sun bears become mostly active at night—rising from 19% to 90%—when humans are present in the forest. Similarly, brown bears in Alaska increase their nighttime activity from 33% to 76% to avoid daytime tourists.

Human activities impact wildlife in various ways beyond hunting. In California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, hikers have made coyotes more active at night, forcing them to hunt prey that is active at night. In Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, sport hunting has led sable antelopes to become active at night, limiting their access to water during the day. These changes significantly alter animal behavior.

An international team of scientists examined 213 research papers to understand how climate change affects 73 vertebrate species. They found that phenology, particularly breeding timing and seasonal migrations, is highly sensitive to temperature changes, with many species breeding earlier during warmer years.

Earlier breeding in some species can help them adapt to temperature changes. The study also examines morphology, focusing on unpredictable alterations in body size, weight, and shape. A 2026 study in Nature Communications explored how phenological shifts affect vertebrate populations, linking these timing changes to physical and demographic outcomes.

Breeding timing and food availability are essential for many species. Birds that breed early without enough food for their chicks, or mammals that shrink in size to cope with heat, struggle to adapt. Climate change is pushing animals to migrate to higher elevations, different latitudes, and deeper waters. Fish are moving north, while mountain and forest species are seeking cooler areas.
