An ancient biblical prophecy about the end of the world definitively unfolds at the Dead Sea.

The Dead Sea is a prominent landlocked salt lake, situated with Jordan to the east, the West Bank to the west, and Israel to the southwest. It resides in the Jordan Rift Valley and holds the distinction of being the lowest point of land on Earth.

Freshwater pools filled with plants and aquatic life have emerged next to the Dead Sea, about 12 miles east of Jerusalem. This development is remarkable, as the Dead Sea is nearly ten times saltier than the ocean and usually lethal to fish.

Over 2,500 years ago, the prophets Ezekiel and Zechariah recorded a prophecy about living waters flowing east from Jerusalem to revitalize the Dead Sea, healing its waters so that fruit trees can thrive and fishermen can cast their nets along the shore.

The changes offer a clear and compelling insight into a prophecy concerning the return of Christ, the end of the world, and the judgment of the dead.

The Dead Sea has a salinity of about 34 percent, consisting mainly of magnesium chloride, potassium, and calcium. This high density allows swimmers to float easily, creating a memorable experience, but the extreme salt concentration makes it uninhabitable for fish and most other life forms.

Freshwater now emerges through sinkholes along sections of the shoreline. This water travels through porous limestone from higher ground around Jerusalem before gravity carries it east toward the lowest exposed point on Earth.

As the Dead Sea shrinks, underground freshwater springs that were once hidden beneath the saltwater are being revealed. Consequently, clear pools have formed at the bottoms of sinkholes, some of which are surrounded by reeds, tamarisks, and other vegetation.

Algae, insects, birds, and small aquatic organisms have formed miniature ecosystems in an area long associated with salt, silence, and death.

Ezekiel 47 describes water flowing eastward from beneath the threshold of a temple in Jerusalem before it enters the sea. The passage states, “When these waters enter the sea, the waters will be healed, and everything that enters this river will live.”

Ezekiel 47:9 And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live whither the river cometh.

The prophet described fishermen casting their nets from En Gedi to En Eglaim, located along the middle of the western shore of the Dead Sea. He also noted that fruit trees grew beside the water, providing fruit for food and leaves for healing.

Ezekiel 47:10 And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from Engedi even unto Eneglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.

Ezekiel 47:11 But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.

Ezekiel 47:12 And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.

Zechariah subsequently described a similar vision, stating that ‘living waters’ would flow out of Jerusalem, with half directed toward the eastern sea, understood as the Dead Sea, and the other half toward the Mediterranean Sea.

Prophecy interpreters highlight the freshwater pools near En Gedi on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea as a significant geographical match. They also associate this vision with the revival of the ancient Judean date palm, particularly a female tree named Hannah that produces dates.

Anyone who understands prophecies knows that the fresh water, vegetation, fruit, and aquatic life appearing around the Dead Sea resemble the elements listed by Ezekiel.

Zechariah states that the Mount of Olives will split from east to west when the Lord returns, creating a vast valley outside of Jerusalem.

Zechariah 14:4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.
