Could Bible Reading Be the Best Self-Care Habit?

A study by the American Bible Society (ABS) clearly shows that reading the Bible delivers better self-care outcomes than exercising, meditating, or spending time with friends.

Proverbs 4:20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.

Proverbs 4:21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.

Proverbs 4:22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

The State of the Bible report explored how common self-care activities, such as exercising, volunteering in the community, meditating, and praying, affect individuals’ stress, anxiety, loneliness, and hope levels.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Researchers examined how reading Scriptures affected feelings of stress, anxiety, loneliness, and hope. They found that people who read Scriptures generally participated in self-care activities—except for exercise—at similar rates to those who did not read them.

However, the study found that reading the Word of God reduced stress and anxiety, increased hope, and alleviated loneliness.

“Our research clearly demonstrates that activities people pursue to boost their overall well-being—like exercise and socializing—are strongly linked to living fuller lives.

Bible reading is also an important factor in this equation,” asserted the chief innovation officer of the American Bible Society and editor-in-chief of the State of the Bible series.

Research shows that the Bible’s connection to reduced stress, anxiety, and loneliness surpasses that of meditation, spending time with friends, or even exercise.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Proverbs 3:6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.

Proverbs 3:8  It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

Those who consistently turn to Scripture experience profound reassurance in stressful times, unwavering hope for the future, and a strengthened relationship with the God who knows them intimately and loves them deeply.

John 14:17 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Since 2020, the ABS has rigorously examined the transformative effects of the word of God on individuals and communities. The compelling findings reveal that the Bible substantially enhances well-being, as reflected in the Human Flourishing Index.

This evidence highlights the crucial role of faith in building a thriving society. The State of the Bible study defined flourishing as “a state of thriving and well-being where all aspects of a person’s life are positive.

“The State of the Bible study defined flourishing as “a state of thriving and well-being where all aspects of a person’s life are good.

Flourishing is not merely an end goal,” states a release from the American Bible Society. “It is a blessing from God that we receive when we trust in Him and walk with Him.

Scripture frequently reminds us that our relationship with God leads to an abundant life, great joy, a peace that surpasses understanding, and rich blessings, ultimately resulting in flourishing.”

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Philippians 4: And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:8  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Overall, researchers strongly recommend Bible reading as a valuable self-care practice. “As the fundamental element of soul care, the Bible invites us into a transformative relationship with God,” the researchers emphasized.

This interaction can profoundly impact our lives.

Romans 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Romans 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

Romans 5:11  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.

2 Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
