The Next Great Global Conflict Has a New Trigger

The United Nations has indicated that the term “water crisis” no longer reflects the dire state of the world’s water resources, suggesting we are now in a “post-crisis era” of “global water bankruptcy.”

The UN urges world leaders to recognize the current crisis, linked to natural water loss, deforestation, pollution, and global warming. They are encouraged to develop science-based solutions to address this reality instead of relying on past responses.

The report outlines concerning statistics about global water quality. Since the early 1990s, half of the world’s largest lakes have lost water, and domestic water supply is now largely reliant on groundwater. Additionally, 410 million hectares of natural wetlands have been destroyed, with 75 percent of people living in countries facing water insecurity.

AccuWeather recently found that annual rainfall in the contiguous U.S. is declining, while extreme rainfall events are increasing. This aligns with the U.N. report’s warning of a post-crisis era. The founder and executive chair of AccuWeather noted to Newsweek that if these trends persist, existing climate models may not account for all significant changes.

He noted that AccuWeather’s study suggests if current trends continue, we could face significant negative impacts on crop production, increased wildfires, and reduced water availability due to worsening droughts.

Crop-growing areas in the U.S. may shrink as soils dry out, with these effects becoming more noticeable over the next decade or two. The study also indicated that ground drying due to global warming could accelerate beyond current climate model projections, in line with U.N. warnings.

AccuWeather’s researchers note that climate change may lead to expanded desert areas and increased flash flooding, as intense rainfall cannot be absorbed by the soil as slowly falling rain does.

The UN’s new report urges world leaders to shift their focus from water issues alone to the broader challenges of water scarcity, advocating prioritizing water in climate negotiations and integrating water bankruptcy monitoring into global frameworks.

“The report highlights the severe water insecurity affecting many regions worldwide,” said a professor of hydrology at Imperial College London. “It rightly points out that many water systems are irreversibly degraded, similar to other natural resources like soils and ecosystems.”

I agree with the report’s call for a long-term approach to sustainable water security rather than short-term crisis management. He suggested that a global water bankruptcy narrative could spur policymakers to act, but it might also induce fear and lead to inaction. He recommends highlighting successful efforts to address water issues and global warming.

2 Chronicles 7:13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send diseases among my people;

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:15 Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attend unto the prayer that is made in this place

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
