On the Brink: A World Living Under Nuclear Threat

Russia’s military incursion into Ukraine, led by President Vladimir Putin, has heightened global fears of nuclear conflict and renewed discussions about the potential consequences of such a disaster.

While it is unlikely that Russia and the United States will engage in a nuclear strike over the Ukraine conflict, such an action would lead to catastrophic consequences for both nations. Each could cause significant damage to the other.

As of March 2024, Russia has about 4,380 nuclear warheads, with an additional 1,200 pending dismantlement, according to the Federation of American Scientists. The use of a tactical nuclear device by Putin in Ukraine could trigger a chain reaction leading to war.

A nuclear war between Russia and the United States would likely involve NATO allies, making many countries unsafe once the missiles are launched. If Vladimir Putin decided to engage in such a conflict, most major U.S. cities could be destroyed by Russia’s first wave of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

New York, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. are identified as primary targets for a nuclear strike, according to a 2015 map by CBS News journalist John Dodge, based on data from FEMA and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The list includes key targets in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, and Wyoming, which house a significant portion of America’s nuclear arsenal. “Some of the larger targets are active nuclear plants.

There are about 90 plants across the U.S., located in Alabama, Arizona, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. As the second-largest nuclear power, the U.S. has 3,708 active warheads and 1,336 retired ones as of May 2024, making it one of the most dangerous places in a nuclear war.

It’s unlikely that Russian bombs would target the United Kingdom in a nuclear war, especially given London’s strong support for Ukraine since the 2022 invasion.

By July 2022, Vladimir Putin had threatened to bomb the UK at least 35 times since the start of the Ukraine invasion. A Cold War-era map from the National Archives indicates that most major UK cities could be targeted.

The targeted locations included major cities such as Central London, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Liverpool, as well as 23 RAF bases, 14 USAF bases, 10 radar stations, 8 military command centers, and 13 Royal Navy bases, indicating significant potential for destruction across the British Isles.

Russia would not escape the devastation of a potential nuclear war, even if Putin were the first to act. If Russia initiated a first strike, the United States and its NATO allies would respond decisively.

There is no clear information about which NATO countries could be targeted in a nuclear war with Russia. Dmitry Rogozin, head of Roscosmos, warned that NATO countries could be destroyed in 30 minutes. Research from August 2023 also indicates that even uninvolved countries could be affected.

A small nuclear conflict could cause global famine. Soot from burning cities would cool the planet, leading to crop failures that endanger five billion people. In a nuclear war between Russia and the United States, no place would be safe, which is extremely worrying.
