U.S. Navy SEALs will conduct joint drills with Argentina this month as the White House focuses on Latin America and the Pentagon prepares for war.
A platoon of Navy SEALs will train with about 40 Argentine tactical divers, according to a U.S. Southern Command spokesperson. A typical platoon has 16 members. President Donald Trump has called Argentina’s far-right leader, Javier Milei, his “favorite president.”
Argentina’s foreign ministry announced that Milei will visit the White House later this month, presenting a new opportunity to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, newly dubbed Secretary of War, spoke to senior U.S. military leaders in Virginia on Tuesday. He stated that the sole mission of the restored Department of War is to focus on warfare and ensure victory.
Milei has authorized U.S. Navy personnel to conduct Exercise “Tridente” in Argentina from October 20 to November 15, as per a presidential decree. A SOUTHCOM spokesperson noted that U.S. Special Operations Forces often engage in joint combined exchange training (JCET) during such exercises.
U.S. and Argentine personnel will conduct joint exercises from October 29 to November 16 at the Mar del Plata naval base. Juan Battaleme, Secretary for International Affairs in Argentina’s Defense Ministry, announced that U.S. soldiers will join Argentine special forces in Puerto Belgrano, Mar del Plata, and Ushuaia.
The decree states that, since Argentina’s Congress did not approve the action, the government will conduct scheduled training through a decree. These exercises aim to strengthen military capabilities and international cooperation.
Not participating, the decree stated, “would significantly affect naval training with the United States Navy.” The SOUTHCOM spokesperson could not disclose details about the vessels or assets for security reasons.
Argentina’s participation in the drills reflects its commitment to regional stability and international security while enhancing its reputation as a U.S. partner and solidifying its role in future multinational operations.
“Compared to recent years, US-Argentine relations are at their peak and are extending into the military sphere,” said a senior research fellow in Latin American security at the U.K.-based Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank.
Milei’s government aims to strengthen defense ties with the United States. In 2024, Argentina purchased 24 F-16 fighter jets from Denmark for approximately $300 million, with U.S. approval. Admiral Alvin Holsey, head of U.S. Southern Command, has visited Argentina twice since May.
Exercise Tridente may develop from Holsey’s tour and could become an annual event. Argentine forces will participate in the “Solidaridad” drills in Puerto Varas, Chile, in October. The U.S. is also hosting UNITAS, a multinational exercise involving 25 countries, including Argentina, and held exercises with Buenos Aires in May 2024.
