Australia hosts largest-ever military exercise with 19 nations

Australia is currently hosting its largest-ever warfighting drills, known as Exercise Talisman Sabre.

This event is expected to attract attention from Chinese spy vessels. Talisman Sabre began in 2005 as a biennial joint exercise between the United States and Australia.

This year, 19 nations, including Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Tonga, and the United Kingdom, will participate over three weeks, according to Australia’s defense department.

The exercise will take place in Papua New Guinea, Australia’s nearest neighbor. This marks the first time Talisman Sabre activities have been conducted beyond Australian borders.

Chinese surveillance ships have consistently monitored naval exercises off the Australian coast during the last four Talisman Sabre exercises. They are poised to track the current exercise as well, according to the Defense Industry Minister.

The Chinese military has observed these exercises since 2017. It would be very unusual for them not to observe it. We will adjust accordingly.

We will actively monitor their activities and presence around Australia. Additionally, we will adapt our exercises accordingly. As of Sunday, the Chinese have not yet begun to shadow our ships.

The exercise officially commenced on Sunday with a ceremony in Sydney, attended by Lt. Gen. J.B. Vowell, the Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Pacific, and Vice-Adm. Justin Jones, Australia’s Chief of Joint Operations.

The exercise demonstrates Australia’s strong defense alliance with the United States, commencing just a day after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese embarked on a six-day visit to China. During this visit, he is set to engage in his fourth face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday.

Albanese stated that Chinese surveillance of Talisman Sabre would not be a topic of discussion with Xi. “That is nothing unusual. It has happened in the past, and I will continue to assert Australia’s national interest, as I always do,” Albanese told reporters in Shanghai on Monday.

Albanese emphasized that he has made five visits to the United States as prime minister, while his trips to China have only totaled two.

The Australian leader has been rightly criticized at home for failing to arrange a face-to-face meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump. “I am eager to engage constructively with President Trump, and I am confident that our three productive phone conversations lay a strong foundation for our relationship,” Albanese declared.
