Scientists are scrambling to explain surge in global heat

The planet has been experiencing rising temperatures for decades, but an unexpected and significant increase in heat has pushed the climate into uncharted territory. Scientists are still investigating the reasons behind this phenomenon.

In the past two years, temperature records have been repeatedly broken by a persistent and puzzling trend that has challenged the best available scientific predictions about the climate.

Scientists agree that burning fossil fuels has significantly contributed to long-term global warming. While natural climate variability can affect temperatures yearly, researchers are still discussing the factors that may have led to the recent and extraordinary rise in heat.

Experts suggest that changes in cloud patterns, airborne pollution, and the Earth’s ability to store carbon may be contributing factors, but a clearer picture may take another year or two to develop.

“Warming in 2023 surpassed all previous years, and 2024 will undoubtedly follow suit,” asserted Gavin Schmidt, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in November. “We are actively assessing the situation and will determine if this indicates a fundamental shift in the operation of our climate system.”

Burning fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which trap heat near the Earth’s surface. As fossil fuel emissions reached record highs in 2023, both average sea surface temperatures and air temperatures have shown a consistent upward trend in warming over the past several decades.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, global temperatures reached record highs from June 2023 to September 2024, making 2023 and 2024 the hottest years in history.

This temperature increase followed a rare three-year La Niña phenomenon that had previously cooled the planet by pushing excess heat into the deep oceans.

In mid-2023, a warming El Niño event released energy to the surface, raising global temperatures. Even after El Niño peaked in January, temperatures remained high, making November the second-warmest on record.

One theory suggests that a shift to cleaner shipping fuels in 2020 increased warming by reducing sulfur emissions that make clouds more reflective of sunlight. In December, a peer-reviewed paper investigated whether a decline in low-lying clouds has increased heat reaching the Earth’s surface.

At the recent American Geophysical Union conference, Schmidt gathered scientists to discuss this and other factors, such as solar cycles and volcanic activity, raising concerns that a lack of comprehensive understanding could lead to missed significant climate changes.

This month, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the Arctic tundra, which has stored carbon dioxide for millennia, releases more emissions than sequesters.

Johan Rockstrom from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research also noted that the oceans, once major carbon sinks, are warming at an inexplicable rate.“Is this an initial indication of a planet losing resilience? We cannot rule it out,” he added.

Jude 1:22 And of some have compassion, making a difference:

Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

Hosea 4:1 The LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.

Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
