Conservationists warn that global wildlife populations have fallen by nearly three-quarters in 50 years.
The world is approaching dangerous “tipping points” in natural systems like the Amazon rainforest and the polar ice caps, posing grave threats to humanity and wildlife.
The recent Living Planet Index by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) shows that global populations of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles have declined by an average of 73% over the past 50 years due to human activities like habitat destruction for food production, exacerbated by climate change.
The index is a crucial component of WWF’s latest Living Planet report, which demands urgent action to overhaul the food production, energy, and finance systems driving the decline in nature—upon which humanity’s survival depends.
The report, released as countries prepare to meet for UN Cop16 and Cop29 meetings on nature and climate, emphatically warns that tipping points are fast approaching.
These points occur when impacts on a natural system reach a threshold, triggering major and potentially irreversible change.
Coral mass die-offs would devastate fisheries and storm protection for millions of coastal communities. Furthermore, melting the Greenland and West Antarctic ice sheets would increase sea levels by several meters.
Deforestation and climate change in the Amazon could soon make the area unsuitable for tropical rainforests, triggering a tipping point that would emit huge amounts of carbon and alter global weather patterns.
According to the Living Planet Index, Latin America and the Caribbean have seen the fastest declines in wildlife, with average wildlife populations dropping by 95% in 50 years.
The report shows that declines have been less dramatic in Europe and North America, reflecting significant impacts on nature before 1970. All globally recognized indicators tell the same story: nature is in free fall.
The report shows declining populations of various species, such as hawksbill turtles in the Great Barrier Reef and Amazon pink river dolphins in Brazil.
It also notes positive conservation progress, like the increasing numbers of mountain gorillas in the Virunga mountains and the resurgence of European Bison populations in central Europe.
However, it warns that these positive trends are insufficient in light of widespread habitat destruction. Governments have set global targets to address climate change, stop and reverse natural decline, and promote sustainable development.
However, the report cautions that there is a significant disparity between the necessary funding and actions and what is currently being implemented.
We must acknowledge that we and other developed countries drive nature loss. Our responsibility is to protect and restore nature, as it underpins our societies and economies, providing the food we eat and the air we breathe.
Hosea 4:1 The LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
Hosea 4:2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.
Hosea 4:3 Therefore shall the land mourn, and everyone that dwelleth therein shall languish=lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
Matthew 24:37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Matthew 24:38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark,
Matthew 24:39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;
Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.
