World War 3 fears: NATO base on high alert after ‘Russian act of sabotage’ warning

NATO has raised security measures at its base in Geilenkirchen, Germany to the second-highest level in response to intelligence pointing to a potential drone sabotage threat, likely originating from Russia.

Last week, the base near Aachen heightened its alert for nearly 24 hours following reports from Germany’s DPA of “preparatory actions for a probable Russian act of sabotage against the NATO base using a drone.”

The site was on high alert for nearly a full day, but it returned to its previous state of alert on August 23. While critical personnel were sent home during the scare, air operations did not cease.

The level classified as Charlie under NATO’s terms is activated in response to an actual incident or when a terrorist attack seems imminent.

This base is home to NATO’s Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft, which play a critical role in monitoring activities up to 400km away along the alliance’s eastern frontiers. These capabilities have been crucial in supporting Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.

AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft have been actively flying over the Black Sea in international airspace since the onset of the war, supplying Kyiv with critical intelligence on Russian military positions and movements.

Western agencies have warned that these actions could prompt Moscow to retaliate by targeting NATO equipment in response to the support provided to Ukraine.

Local media reports suggested that US military bases in Germany were on high alert in July due to fears of a potential attack.

The German Air Force base near Cologne was locked down earlier this month due to legitimate concerns about a compromised water supply.

A thorough investigation revealed no evidence of sabotage. Although there were reports of suspicious activity at Geilenkirchen and an individual was briefly detained for questioning near the base, no unusual findings were detected.
