A Russian shortwave station that had been silent for months resumed broadcasting on Monday, prompting questions about its purpose.
Reports suggest that Vladimir Putin is worried about Ukraine striking Russian targets with British-made missiles. The UZB-76 station, dating back to the Cold War, has intrigued shortwave enthusiasts for decades.
Commonly known as the “Buzzer,” it has emitted droning tones since the 1970s, occasionally including brief encrypted messages.
On Monday, two codes were revealed: “NZHTI,” a previously used call sign, and “HOTEL” followed by the digits 38, 965, 78, 58, 88, 37. This comes amid rumors that Putin may be using a body double, sparked by a hidden ‘clue’ during his appearance with Trump.
A recording of a Russian radio transmission has been circulating on social media, prompting users on X to speculate that the numbers may represent coordinates. One person asked if “something big is happening tonight,” while others questioned the intended audience for the messages.
The significance of Monday’s broadcast and earlier transmissions is uncertain, as they often use coded language. For instance, logs from the Telegram channel UVB-76 noted four terms transmitted last April: Neptune, Thymus, Foxcloak, and Nootabu.
Military forces are believed to still operate the transmission, which has been broadcasting voice instructions since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It has been nicknamed “Doomsday Radio” due to speculation that it is tied to Russia’s automated nuclear retaliation system.
A radio enthusiast from the Netherlands, who operates the Numbers & Oddities website, has encountered various unusual theories related to a specific radio station.
Some people believe it could be an old Soviet Dead Man’s Switch capable of initiating a nuclear attack if it ceases to operate.
Although the station will continue to be a topic of intense debate, there is no evidence to suggest that the numbers indicate anything harmful. A professor of electronic and radio engineering speculated that if the Russian government were to use it, “it wouldn’t be for peaceful purposes.”
