What Cities Drown First When the Poles Ice Melt?

Miami is facing “sunny-day flooding” from high tides, with NOAA projecting over two feet of sea-level rise by 2100 under high-emission scenarios.

Even small increases in sea level can overwhelm Miami’s porous limestone foundation, allowing seawater to seep in. If polar ice melt accelerates, significant parts of Miami, including downtown and Miami Beach, could soon be submerged. The region’s low elevation puts it at high risk of flooding.

New Orleans is mostly below sea level and relies on levees for protection. If ice melt causes even moderate sea-level rise, large parts of the city could be submerged, making it one of the first major U.S. cities to face severe floods.

New York City faces significant flooding risks due to its coastline. NOAA projects that even minor sea-level rises could affect areas such as Lower Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Significant melting of the ice sheets could submerge vital locations, including Wall Street and LaGuardia Airport, leading to irreversible coastal retreat.

London relies on the Thames Barrier for flood protection against storm surges and moderate sea-level rise, but it cannot withstand extreme scenarios from significant melt of polar ice. Many low-lying areas in East London and the Thames Estuary could be overwhelmed, risking millions and reshaping the city.

The Netherlands is mostly below sea level, putting cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague at risk of flooding if significant ice sheet melt occurs. This geography makes the country particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels.

Bangkok is sinking due to groundwater extraction and is only 1 to 2 meters above the Gulf of Thailand. The IPCC warns that Southeast Asia faces some of the fastest sea-level rise rates globally. Even small increases could flood the city and overwhelm its drainage systems, while significant ice melt could completely submerge Bangkok, displacing millions.

Shanghai, with over 25 million residents, sits on low-lying river deltas and is susceptible to flooding from typhoons and storm surges. NASA and Climate Central models suggest that just a few feet of sea-level rise could submerge much of the city, making it one of the fastest-flooding megacities due to its flat terrain and proximity to the East China Sea.

Mumbai, located on a narrow peninsula, is home to millions of residents at risk from strong monsoons and coastal erosion. IPCC projections indicate that rising ocean temperatures will lead to more severe flooding in South Asia, threatening business districts and informal settlements. Additionally, saltwater intrusion could contaminate local freshwater supplies.

Alexandria, Egypt, on the Mediterranean coast, is highly vulnerable to rising sea levels. Research in *Nature Climate Change* shows that Northern Africa will face severe coastal impacts from this and storm surges. In extreme scenarios, flooding could affect Alexandria’s historic districts and ports, leading to erosion and saltwater intrusion that would change the city’s landscape.

Jakarta is sinking rapidly due to groundwater extraction, with some areas declining over 10 inches per year. With rising sea levels, the city is relocating its national capital to Borneo. If polar ice caps melt significantly, Jakarta could be one of the first cities to submerge completely.

Several Pacific Island nations, including Kiribati, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands, are situated only a few feet above sea level. Even slight increases in sea level threaten their entire existence. Complete polar ice melt would entirely erase these islands from the map.
