“A Dark Warning: Iran Threat Puts U.S. Homeland on Edge”

Iranian drone strikes hit the UK’s Royal Air Force base at Akrotiri in Cyprus and a major Saudi Aramco refinery, marking the first attack on European territory in retaliation against U.S.-Israeli strikes.

Federal counterterrorism agencies are on high alert for potential retaliatory attacks on U.S. soil after U.S. and Israeli strikes in Iran killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other officials.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned that Iranian “sleeper cells” operating within the United States pose a serious threat following Operation Epic Fury, stressing that this danger must be taken “seriously” as the state enhances its security measures.

“In times of war, like a potential conflict with Iran, sleeper cells and lone wolves often emerge,” Abbott stated. Tensions rose after a shooting in Austin early Sunday, where Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Senegal, opened fire near a downtown bar, killing two and injuring 14.

Diagne wore a sweater saying “PROPERTY OF ALLAH” during the attack. Law enforcement reportedly found the flag of Iran and photos of its leaders in his home.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are on high alert due to concerns that U.S. strikes on Iranian targets, ordered by President Trump, could provoke retaliation from Iran and its proxy forces.

Experts on Iran express concern over its ability to conduct foreign attacks, including in the United States, developed over many years.

“If there was ever a time for the regime to act, it is now.” Iran has already launched retaliatory strikes across the Middle East, targeting countries hosting U.S. military bases like Bahrain and the UAE.

The risk of terror and cyberattacks on U.S. and Israeli targets by Iran’s Quds Force and proxies like Hezbollah has increased. “Iran, facing an existential threat, may use unconventional tactics to impose costs on the U.S., Israel, and the West,” he warned.

The Defence Secretary announced that the UK’s terror threat level is under review. He cautioned that while the risk of terrorism is currently “low” due to recent “defensive action,” it is still “difficult to predict” where Iran or its proxies might strike.

Experts warn that Iran has a plan for terror attacks using sleeper cells and proxy groups in Britain and Europe. Last year, MI5 reported that Tehran was linked to 20 potentially deadly plots in the UK.

A senior fellow at the Scowcroft Centre for Strategy and Security at the Atlantic Council has warned of a rising risk of terrorism in the Western world. She noted that “Iran could attempt assassinations or terror attacks” and may activate proxies like the Houthis or Hezbollah, as well as recruit individuals for attacks in Europe and the U.S.

On March 1, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that “bloodshed and revenge” are Iran’s “legitimate rights and duties.” The Iranian regime has a lengthy history, spanning over 46 years, of conducting assassinations and terrorist plots against Americans both in the U.S. and abroad.

This includes disrupted attempts aimed at Iranian dissidents and plots against former President Trump and his National Security Adviser, in retaliation for the 2020 military strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani.

On June 22, the United States raised security measures amid concerns about retaliation from Tehran after the bombing of three Iranian nuclear sites. Major cities, including New York and Los Angeles, enhanced their security, and the government issued warnings to citizens domestically and abroad.

The FBI and Department of Homeland Security also issued terrorism advisories due to Washington’s involvement in last year’s “12-day war” between Iran and Israel.

The FBI redirected agents from immigration efforts to counterterrorism in anticipation of possible attacks, as noted by Levitt in an article for the U.S. Army’s Combating Terrorism Center in August. Federal officials urged state and local governments to stay vigilant for potential domestic plots.

A Department of Homeland Security bulletin warned that the conflict with Iran is raising the threat level in the U.S. It highlighted concerns about potential terror plots and cyberattacks on U.S. networks, likely by pro-Iranian hacktivists and possibly the Iranian government.

The bulletin noted Iran’s “long-standing commitment to target U.S. government officials.” It stated that “the likelihood of violent extremists in the Homeland independently resorting to violence would likely increase if Iranian leadership were to issue a religious ruling calling for retaliatory violence against targets within the Homeland.”

In November 2024, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York charged three men in a murder-for-hire plot against a U.S. citizen of Iranian descent. One of the men, Iran-based operative Farhad Shakeri, was also accused of being directed by Iran and the IRGC to plot the assassination of former President Trump in retaliation for Qassem Soleimani’s killing, according to a Justice Department complaint.

Carlisle “Pop” Rivera, 49, and Jonathon Loadholt, 36, both from New York, have been indicted. Asif Merchant, also with ties to Iran, is currently on trial for allegedly participating in a 2024 terrorism plot to kill Trump.

Bolton disclosed that he received multiple “duty to warn” alerts from the FBI after confirmed Iranian threats against his life linked to his involvement in the Soleimani assassination.

The FBI deemed the threats against Bolton serious enough to request special Secret Service protection from the Biden administration starting at Thanksgiving 2021. This protection ended on Trump’s first day back in office in January 2025, following a falling out after the release of Bolton’s tell-all memoir about his time in Trump’s administration.
