As the threat of nuclear war continues to increase due to escalating geopolitical tensions, individuals are being encouraged to follow safety precautions in case of an attack.

Nuclear explosions can cause severe damage and casualties due to blast, heat, and radiation. Fallout, which consists of radioactive dirt and debris falling from the sky, can cause illness in individuals who are outside.

According to FEMA, fallout is at its most dangerous in the first few hours following detonation, when it releases the highest levels of radiation. It typically takes more than 15 minutes for the fallout to reach ground level, providing people with a critical window of time to take action and minimize their exposure to harmful radiation.

During this time, FEMA advises individuals to seek shelter inside the nearest building to protect themselves from radiation and to remain there for 24 hours, unless instructed otherwise by authorities. The agency also recommends moving away from windows to enhance protection from any potential blast.

“Immediately go to the basement or the center of the building. Avoid the outer walls and roof at all costs,” urged FEMA in a safety document. “Outdoor areas, vehicles, and mobile homes do not offer adequate shelter.”

Seek shelter in basements or the center of large multi-story buildings. Once inside, individuals should remove any contaminated clothing and clean or wash any exposed skin if they were outside after the fallout occurred. It is important to take a shower or wash with soap and water to remove any fallout from skin or hair that was not covered.

If you are unable to wash or take a shower, use a wipe or a clean, wet cloth to clean any exposed skin and hair. The FEMA document also advises cleaning any pets that were outside after the fallout occurred. Gently brush your pet’s coat to remove any fallout particles, and if possible, wash your pet with soap and water.

The agency advises individuals to stay informed through official updates regarding when it is safe to leave an area. FEMA cautions those who are outside during a detonation to seek cover behind any object that can provide protection.

It is recommended to lie face down in order to shield exposed skin from the heat and flying debris. If you find yourself in a vehicle during an emergency, stop safely and duck down inside immediately. It is crucial to have an emergency supply kit prepared.

This kit should include bottled water, packaged food, emergency medications, and a reliable hand-crank or battery-powered radio to stay informed in the event of a power outage. Don’t forget to include a flashlight and extra batteries for essential items. Be proactive and ensure your safety!
