Pakistan Developing Nuclear Ballistic Missile That Can Reach America

U.S. intelligence officials report that Pakistan is developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that could reach the United States, potentially altering global geopolitics.

Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) can be armed with nuclear or conventional warheads and are capable of striking targets more than 5,500 km away.

The analysis of global nuclear risks in a Foreign Affairs article suggests that Pakistan’s strategic ambitions may be extending well beyond its immediate neighborhood.

Experts in nuclear security from MIT, who have both recently held senior positions within the U.S. defense sector, are warning that Pakistan may be aiming to deter not only New Delhi but also Washington.

Meanwhile, Islamabad maintains that its nuclear program is exclusively focused on deterring India.

According to an influential policy journal, the country’s hope is that an ICBM threat may dissuade the U.S. from attempting to preemptively eliminate Pakistan’s arsenal or intervene in the event of another conflict between India and Pakistan.

“If Pakistan develops an ICBM,” the report asserts, “Washington will be compelled to regard the nation as a nuclear adversary. No other country possessing ICBMs that can target the United States is treated as an ally.”

According to a report from US officials, if Pakistan successfully develops a missile of this kind, Washington would categorize the country as a nuclear adversary. Currently, Russia, China, and North Korea are viewed as adversaries to the US.

The development, once realized, will represent a significant shift, enabling a nation outside the usual adversarial bloc of Russia, China, and North Korea to directly threaten the U.S. homeland with nuclear force for the first time.

It adds another layer of volatility to global nuclear threats, as deterrence doctrines erode and arms control collapses, reshaping the nuclear rules of engagement.
