Researchers at the University of Tokyo and Waseda University have developed a biohybrid hand that merges lab-grown muscle tissue with mechanical engineering, enabling it to grip and make gestures.
This innovation decisively paves the way for a new generation of robotics with a wide range of applications. While soft robots and advanced prosthetics are rapidly becoming the norm, the integration of living tissue with machines is still an uncommon frontier that holds immense potential.
Biohybrid science is rapidly emerging as a groundbreaking field, showcasing innovative examples like artificial fish powered by human heart cells and robots that use locust ears for hearing. The development of this new biohybrid hand is a decisive leap forward, demonstrating the powerful practical applications of this technology.
The team grew muscle fibers in the lab but found them too fragile to use alone. To strengthen them, they created “multiple tissue actuators,” or MuMuTAs. “Our key achievement was developing the MuMuTAs,” said the team from the University of Tokyo.
Their main achievement was the creation of MuMuTAs. By rolling thin strands of muscle tissue like sushi rolls, they produced enough contractile force and length to facilitate hand movement.
A notable finding was that the biohybrid hand experienced fatigue like a real human hand. After 10 minutes of use, the strength of the tissue declined but recovered within an hour of rest. This highlights the lifelike properties of the engineered muscle tissue.
The team acknowledges that their creation is currently a proof of concept. During the study, the hand was floated in a liquid to minimize friction. To address the issue of the segments returning to a neutral position after being flexed, they suggest adding elastic materials or more MuMuTAs.
By bundling the tissue together, researchers have addressed a significant challenge in scaling up biohybrid devices. Previously, these devices were restricted to a size of about one centimeter. The development of MuMuTAs represents a crucial advancement in the effort to replicate biological systems, which necessitates increasing the size of these devices.
Biohybrid robotics is an emerging field with the potential to transform advanced prosthetics. It can help us understand muscle tissue function, test surgical procedures, and develop targeted drugs. The biohybrid hand exemplifies the integration of biology and engineering.
Although still in its early stages, this technology provides a preview of a future where robots can move and respond like living beings. The development of MuMuTAs has overcome significant challenges, paving the way for advanced prosthetics and a deeper understanding of how muscle tissue functions.

Revelation 13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Revelation 13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
