Pentagon Warns China’s Missile Threat: “World Is on Edge”

A Pentagon report reveals that China has over 100 long-range nuclear missiles capable of reaching the U.S.

The December 23 report to Congress indicated that China has deployed over 100 DF-31 intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) in underground silos. These solid-fuel missiles can be launched quickly, unlike older liquid-fueled ones that require more preparation time.

The U.S. Department of Defense has detected missile silos in three remote regions of northern and western China: Hami in Xinjiang, Yumen in Gansu, and Yulin in Inner Mongolia. Of the roughly 320 silos, over 100 are loaded, enabling China to reposition missiles and confuse adversaries, akin to a “shell game.”

The DF-31 missiles can reach up to 6,800 miles, enabling them to hit most of the United States from China. In 2024, China tested one by launching it into the Pacific Ocean, showing its long-distance capability. This military buildup has increased vulnerability for the US homeland.

China is enhancing its military capabilities, including an expanding nuclear arsenal, maritime forces, and cyber tools, posing a threat to American security, according to a recent Pentagon report.

The report warns that China aims to exceed 1,000 nuclear warheads by 2030, allowing for faster responses to threats, amidst rising tensions in the US-China competition for influence in Asia.

The Department of War indicates that China’s goal is to become a global superpower by 2049, focusing on building a strong military to protect its interests and assert control over regions like Taiwan.

The Chinese Communist Party prioritizes maintaining power, growing the economy, and defending territorial claims as non-negotiable “core interests” with the U.S. A recent report indicates that China is boosting its military capabilities in anticipation of a possible invasion or blockade of Taiwan by 2027.

It highlights large-scale exercises with long-range strikes that could target U.S. forces. Pentagon officials note that China sees bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress for containing its influence, which concerns U.S. allies in Asia, including Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.

Amid rising tensions and nuclear proliferation, a senior Department of War official told the Daily Mail that the White House and Pentagon are committed to de-escalation.

“President Trump seeks stable peace, fair trade, and respectful relations with China, and we will enhance military communications with the People’s Liberation Army to show our peaceful intentions,” the official stated.

A 2024 report by the Federation of American Scientists (FAS) revealed that 12,121 nuclear warheads are held by nine countries: the United States, Russia, China, France, India, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom. Russia has several hundred more warheads than the United States.

Russia and the United States hold about 88 percent of the global nuclear stockpile, with Russia having 5,580 bombs and the U.S. possessing 5,044. Meanwhile, China, along with Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea, has been steadily increasing its nuclear arsenal over the past 40 years.

A recent Pentagon report estimates that China has a stockpile of nuclear warheads in the “low 600s” and is projected to increase this number by about 100 each year this decade. The Department of Defense has not commented further on its concerns regarding China’s nuclear program.
