The potential conflict with China is prompting the federal government to boost its missile stockpile.
Defense contractors are being urged to significantly increase production. The Pentagon has identified a “Deadly Dozen” of essential weapons for a potential conflict with China, including Patriot interceptors and Long Range Anti-Ship Missiles.
Some missiles can take up to two years to assemble, so the Trump administration’s efforts appear to be focused on the potential for U.S.-China relations to deteriorate further.
In June, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, summoned defense contractors to the Pentagon to urge suppliers to act quickly.
Contractors were asked to increase their production rate by 2.5 times in two years. Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg has been leading the Munitions Acceleration Council, requesting weekly progress reports.
“President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are seeking ways to boost military capabilities and accelerate munitions production,” a Pentagon spokesman stated. “This initiative involves collaboration between defense industry leaders and Pentagon officials.”
The logistics of producing complex weapons hinder the rapid production that the U.S. achieved in World War II. “Companies don’t build these systems without specific orders,” said Tom Karako, a munitions expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“Support from the government can’t just be words; it must come with funding,” said Christopher Calio, CEO of RTX, the parent company of Raytheon, in a July letter to the Pentagon. He emphasized the need for financial backing and a commitment to boost production.
“Demand for these critical munitions must be communicated to the supply chain through Program of Record extensions and necessary funding,” he wrote. Concerns about the military supply chain arose in 2023 when the Undersecretary of Defense noted its inadequate responsiveness, stating, “The current conflict in Ukraine has been a wake-up call.”
“We have let production lines sit idle and seen suppliers go out of business. In September, the Army awarded Lockheed nearly $10 billion to produce about 2,000 PAC-3 missiles from 2024 to 2026. The Pentagon aims for that same annual production of Patriot missiles, marking a fourfold increase from the current rate.”
Boeing has enhanced its facilities to produce a key component, known as a seeker, which was previously limiting missile production. In August, the Pentagon purchased a record $3.5 billion in AIM-120 missiles from Raytheon, at a cost of around $1 million each, for use by the U.S. and its allies.
Recent Houthi drone attacks and Israel’s protection have depleted munitions stockpiles. To address this, the Pentagon is seeking to reallocate about $123 million to replace ordnance used against Iran’s nuclear facilities, according to The War Zone.
