Ocean Temperatures (69.98°F) for the First Time, Shattering Global Records

In August 2023, global average ocean temperatures reached an unprecedented 69.98°F (21.1°C), exceeding the previous record set in 2016.

The Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed this notable increase in temperature, highlighting the swift impact of climate change and ocean warming globally.

Since oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, even slight increases in average temperatures can have extensive effects. This data emphasizes the urgent need for global awareness and action against climate change.

This heat wave affects not only water temperatures but also marine life and weather patterns. Scientists emphasize the need to understand and address the consequences of a warming planet.

The North Atlantic Ocean has experienced significant temperature anomalies, with areas near Ireland, the Iberian Peninsula, and the Gulf of Mexico reporting temperatures up to 5°C above average.

This heat wave has disrupted marine ecosystems, affecting species diversity and behavior. It has also led to stronger hurricanes and altered ocean currents, changing the habitats of many marine species.

Warmer ocean temperatures contribute to stronger tropical storms and hurricanes. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), higher surface water temperatures provide the energy needed for these storms to intensify rapidly. In 2023, Hurricanes Idalia and Doksuri exemplified this trend by strengthening unusually quickly.

Rising sea surface temperatures have led to stronger storms and heavier rainfall, threatening coastal communities. Marine heat waves also severely impact coral reefs, causing widespread bleaching. The Great Barrier Reef and Caribbean coral systems have faced significant bleaching due to prolonged high temperatures.

The NOAA Coral Reef Watch has issued its highest alert, warning of potential mass coral death if temperatures stay above 30°C for too long. Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” are essential for marine biodiversity and provide a habitat for many species.

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a remarkable 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases since the 1970s has been absorbed by the world’s oceans.

Ocean heat absorption reduces some atmospheric warming but disrupts ocean circulation and marine ecosystems. It influences global weather patterns, contributing to El Niño and La Niña, and alters the distribution of marine species, impacting fisheries.

Additionally, rising ocean temperatures cause thermal expansion, contributing to an estimated sea-level rise of about 3.4 mm per year, according to NASA’s Sea Level Change Team.

Rising sea levels pose significant challenges for coastal communities from Bangladesh to Louisiana. They threaten infrastructure and ecosystems through increased erosion and saltwater intrusion. This, combined with extreme weather events, heightens the risk of flooding and property damage.

Scientists warn that the alarming trend of rising ocean temperatures necessitates immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Without drastic cuts in CO₂ and methane, these changes will be largely irreversible. The warming ocean also disrupts marine biodiversity, altering habitats and food chains.

Species that depend on specific temperature ranges may migrate to cooler waters, disrupting ecosystems. This can change species composition, leading to some thriving while others decline, ultimately affecting fisheries and food security for millions.

Rising ocean temperatures have significant economic impacts on industries like fishing, tourism, and shipping. Warmer waters can shift fish populations, affecting commercial fisheries and those who depend on them for their livelihoods.

Luke 17:26  And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

Luke 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

Luke 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded;

Luke 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Luke 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

Luke 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and diseases; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

Luke 21:25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Luke 21:28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Matthew 24:45 Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?

Matthew 24:46 Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.

Matthew 24:47 Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods. And the evil servant would not be watching for his return and he would receive the same as a hypocrite.

Matthew 24:48 But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming;

Matthew 24:50  The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

Matthew 24:51 And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Matthew 7:23  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work sin.
