North Korea has reportedly built a secret missile base for its long-range weapons, raising concerns about evading U.N. sanctions.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has clearly identified a hardened facility near Sinpung-dong specifically designed to accommodate intercontinental ballistic missiles and launchers.
Analysts observed that the site could facilitate quick dispersal and ensure operational readiness. According to CSIS analysts, “During times of crisis or war, these launchers and missiles will leave the base, meet with specialized units for warhead storage and transportation, and conduct launch operations from previously surveyed dispersed locations.”
Victor Cha, the CSIS Korea Chair, asserts that North Korea deliberately places its missile bases near the Chinese border to hinder any U.S. efforts to target them effectively.
North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un asserted, “In response to the rapidly changing global security landscape and the reckless expansion of the U.S.-led military alliance, we are resolute in our conclusion that our nuclear forces and strategy must be enhanced and perfected. We recognize the importance of this necessity continuously.”
“We recognize its necessity every single day and every minute.” The CSIS has confirmed that construction of the site commenced in 2004 and it became fully operational by 2014, incorporating barracks, an underground facility, and two hardened checkout bays.
Analysts assert that the garrison is likely brigade-sized and has the capacity to field six to nine nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). Furthermore, the shelters are sufficiently large to accommodate known launcher types.
CSIS analysts have issued a stark warning: these missiles pose a significant potential nuclear threat not only to East Asia but also to the very heart of the continental United States.
The analysts stated, “Current assessments indicate that during times of crisis or war, these launchers and missiles will leave the base, meet with specialized warhead storage and transportation units, and conduct launch operations from previously surveyed sites.”
Warheads are not commonly mounted on missiles. The site lacks permanent air defenses, but it is strategically located near surface-to-air systems and air defense artillery units.
