The Chinese communist government has banned the word “Christ” and other religious terms from social media apps under a new policy that took effect on March 1, claiming that these terms cause “incitement.”
The Chinese Communist Party has introduced a new law called the “Measures for the Administration of Internet Religious Information Services.”
This law prohibits individuals and organizations from posting religious information online unless they have first obtained permission from a provincial government department, according to China Aid, an organization that monitors religious freedom in the country.
A church member utilized WeChat to post the titles of eight essential books for the reading group. The WeChat app rejected the post, stating that the word “Christ” was not permissible.
It explained, “The term ‘Christ’ you are attempting to publish violates regulations on Internet Information Services, which include, but are not limited to, the following categories: pornography, gambling, drug abuse, excessive marketing, and incitement.”
“The group administrator had to alter part of the word ‘Christ’ to comply with censorship,” stated China Aid.
“China Aid reports that individuals posting content that incites state power through religion, opposes the Chinese Communist Party, undermines socialism, or threatens national unity and stability will be punished.”
