Sudan Kenya is engulfed in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands dead and millions forcibly displaced after nearly two years of intense conflict between military factions. Civilians are bearing the harshest consequences of this violence, while widespread famine is taking a toll on much of the country.
Over twenty-one months of intense fighting between two powerful generals has devastated Sudan. The U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization describes the situation as dire, with over 61,000 people killed and many more injured.
Antony Blinken, former U.S. Secretary of State, highlighted daily atrocities, including attacks on hospitals, markets, and displaced persons camps, as well as summary executions and sexual violence against women and girls, during his testimony before the United Nations Security Council.
The U.S. has officially declared the situation as genocide, and the U.N. has described the human suffering as catastrophic. “Over 11.5 million people are now internally displaced, with nearly 8.8 million uprooted since April 2023,” stated the United Nations.
For more than a decade, organizations have advocated for human rights and religious freedom in this predominantly Muslim country. They emphasize that the ongoing war has severely disrupted food systems, leaving approximately 25 million people—half of the country’s population—facing famine.
Sudan has the potential to feed half of Africa if it fully harnesses its agricultural resources. It is unacceptable that, despite its wealth, Sudan is being exploited for gold while its people endure unimaginable suffering. This is an act of destruction against a nation, contributing to the largest displacement crisis in the world.
Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab has decisively documented alleged crimes perpetrated by both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rival Rapid Support Forces since the conflict erupted in 2023, utilizing satellite images to provide undeniable evidence. The pervasive violence inflicted by both groups has severely impacted civilians, who are bearing the overwhelming brunt of this brutality.
The destruction includes entire villages set ablaze, rampant mass killings of innocents, and extensive damage to crucial infrastructure across Sudan, including hospitals, bridges, and the essential means to sustain food production.
The State Department has accused the Sudanese paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), of genocide and imposed sanctions on its leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Former Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the RSF is targeting women and girls from particular ethnic groups for rape. Women are being raped everywhere from ages 8 to 75. The civilian population has suffered tremendously, said Christian aid organization World Vision, which is providing relief to displaced civilians.
Sudan’s crisis is often overlooked due to the war in Gaza and Ukraine, but it remains critical. World Vision is working to send more relief workers into the country, where the number of displaced children is the highest in the world. Since the war began, over three million people, mostly women and children, have fled to neighboring Chad. Currently, 40% of children in emergency clinics are malnourished and in urgent need of help.
World Vision reports that it has assisted approximately three million people by providing food, clean water, and sanitation services. However, due to ongoing violence, access to the hardest-hit areas remains restricted.
Sudan is one of the largest gold producers on the continent, and several countries—such as Iran, Russia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates—are purchasing gold in exchange for arms for both sides involved in the conflict.
The Rapid Support Forces and Sudan Armed Forces are exploiting the country’s mineral wealth, particularly gold, and selling it to external actors like the United Arab Emirates and Iran, who are fueling the conflict. After 21 months of war, there are no signs of it slowing down; instead, it continues to escalate.
