China Unveils New Nuclear Missiles for ‘Global’ Reach

During a large-scale Victory Day parade in Beijing, China unveiled its latest intercontinental nuclear missile, the Dongfeng 5C (DF-5C).

The event powerfully commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Asia, showcasing President Xi Jinping as he delivered a significant speech and conducted a thorough inspection of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops.

Prominent world leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, Belarus’ Alexander Lukashenko, and Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim, gathered for the ceremony. The parade boldly showcased China’s latest weapons, with the DF-5C prominently highlighted as a key feature.

China’s state-run Global Times reports that the DF-5C missile has an estimated range of over 12,427 miles (20,000 kilometers), enabling it to reach anywhere in the world. This liquid-fueled intercontinental nuclear missile integrates technologies from earlier DF series models, including the DF-5 and DF-41, enhancing its role in global deterrence and stability.

“It provides significant strategic value,” stated Professor Yang Chengjun, an expert in missile technology.

He highlighted six key features of the missile, including its innovative structure that allows it to be transported in three sections by different vehicles, enabling faster launch preparation compared to earlier DF-5 models.

Second, the missile has an extended range that exceeds 12,427, allowing China to counter threats anywhere in the world.

Third, it can be launched through multiple methods, building on experience from previous DF missiles.

Fourth, the DF-5C flies at extreme speeds estimated to reach tens of Mach, giving missile defense systems minimal time to react.

Fifth, it can carry multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs) equipped with nuclear or conventional warheads, or decoys, complicating defense system intercepts, according to Yang.

The sixth feature is advanced guided precision. Using a combination of inertial guidance, starlight guidance, and China’s Beidou navigation system, the missile can accurately strike targets like mid- and short-range missiles.

China’s nuclear strategy prioritizes deterrence and defense. Yang highlighted that the DF-5C and other displayed weapons align with this policy. Beijing is committed to not being the first to use nuclear weapons and does not target non-nuclear states or nuclear-free zones.

Military blogger Ma Yan, as reported by the South China Morning Post, stated that the DF-5C missile shows that “China’s strategic deterrence is credible, reliable, and sufficient.” She noted it can carry up to ten warheads, allowing simultaneous strikes on multiple targets, which enhances China’s nuclear deterrent strategy for effective retaliatory strikes under challenging conditions.

Yang noted that displaying strategic weapons underscores China’s complex security environment and the growth of its military capabilities. Alongside the DF-5C, the PLA revealed other nuclear-capable missiles, including the JL-1 and JL-3, which represent the components of China’s nuclear triad.

Carrier-based aircraft, such as the J-35 stealth fighter and J-15T, were showcased, marking advances in naval aviation. The J-35 represents a key step in China’s shift from near-sea to far-sea defense. The H-6J long-range bomber, armed with YJ-12 supersonic anti-ship missiles, was also featured. Additionally, new AI-equipped drones demonstrated autonomous swarming and reconnaissance-strike capabilities.

The parade was not just a display of military strength; it also carried significant political symbolism. As China showcased its weapons to the world, U.S. President Donald Trump accused Xi Jinping, Kim Jong-un, and Vladimir Putin of conspiring against America by appearing together at the event.
